Happeners in the MC News!

Along with the four actors in the production of The Shape of Things, eight artists were cast and charged with the creation of "Happenings" across the MC Campus.  Though the structure was fairly loose, each event had to be artistic in some manor, slightly spontaneous, and unpublicized.  These happenings occurred randomly across the campus throughout the rehearsal and performance of the production.  Their purpose was to spur a discussion of art, the role of the artist in society, and to question the boundaries of art.

The image above and below are from the first happening.  Flash Mob style, the artists arrived on the first floor of Wallace Hall.  At precisely 11:55, the eight members froze their position amongst the hurried rush of the changing classes.  They became a living installation, reaching for bags, checking the cell phone, or leaning against a wall.  Passers-by quickly began to comment and question the moment.  At 11:57, the artists broke their position and dispersed.

The Artists:

Marcus Bailey, Mark Woessner, Kristina Heinzman, Kelsey Cole, Ryan Burns, Felicia Roberts, Ashley Musser and Jim Travnik

They like to be known as:
The Aaaaahhhhhttttt Faaaatttaaahhhaass

Happenings (n, pl)

a form of art, often carefully planned but usually including some degree of spontaneity, in which an artist performs or directs an event combining elements of theater and the visual arts. The term was coined by the artist Allan Kaprow (b. 1927) in 1959.

Ok, so, not a "happening" but a surprise!  This is a pic. of Jess "Crash" Boggie.  It was taken at our local hospital a few minutes after a rehearsal.  Don't worry, 5 stitches can't stop "Crash."  No time wasted on sympathy, we turned this pic into a caption contest.  We'll post the winning caption in a few weeks!

Below are a few pictures of a late night Tea-Party that sprung up on the Quad.  The celebration took place in the
rain, lasted a few moments, and quietly disappeared.

Images to the right were taking during an afternoon Flash Mob.  Suddenly, on Dunlap Terrace, "Don't Fear the Reaper" was heard from the dorm room windows.  Artists appeared playing a bit of "air-cowbell."

Musical?  Yes, but was it music?

The image below was from a Happening in The Stock-
dale center.  Students with a variety of phones swarmed the
lobby, speaking loudly about a variety of topics.  After a moment
of beautifully choreographed movements, they dispersed.

Is this a collaborative artistic installation?  Or is it merely trash?

BUT IS THIS ART?

The images below were from a musical happening. Surprise!  Surprise!  A "Hillbilly" band struck a few cords on the MC campus.
