May 2007

From the Co-Presidents

by Lila Blum and Marilyn Van Ausdall

We were very pleased with the turnout at our April meeting.  Karen Angotti, founder and program director of Rainbow Riders therapeutic horseback riding for children, presented an inspiring program of hope.  Those of us who were present were shown the amazing changes that these special horses can bring about in children with special needs.  For those looking for volunteer opportunities, Rainbow Riders has many jobs available in many areas, and always welcomes new volunteers. Please visit rainbowridershome.org for more information.

We want to extend special thanks to Isa Sippo and Nancy Buban for providing the delicious refreshments for the meeting.  The homemade lemonade was a special treat!

Lila, Marilyn, and Ronda Willhardt had an enjoyable trip to Bloomington on Saturday, April 28, for the AAUW-IL Convention.  We are pleased to announce that the Monmouth Branch received a Branch Pride Recognition Award, again received First Place in District 3 for Outstanding Newsletter in branches with 31-75 members, and we were recognized for 114% membership retention for the current program year.  Bev Madsen, District 3 Director, also recognized our branch for having the Women’s Film Group, the website, and the program on Rainbow Riders. Reports will follow later in this newsletter regarding the breakout sessions that we attended at convention.

Our May dinner meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 21, at Monmouth Soda Works, 112 S. 1st St.  Information regarding the menu and reservations appears later in this newsletter.  Please remember to let Marilyn know if you plan to attend.  Dinner will be followed by a short business meeting and election of officers.  We will also be asking you for suggestions for our ’07-’08 programs.  You’re then invited to join us as we move 2 blocks north to the Prairie Tech Learning Center at 88 Public Square where member Linda Lee Blaine will show us highlights of the program that we missed in January due to bad weather.  Hope to see you on the 21st!
