LAF: 25 Years of Progress and Precedents

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, a program of the AAUW Educational Foundation, has begun its year-long celebration of its 25th anniversary. Read more about it in the fall 2006 issue of LAF Update, which featured an interview with one of LAF’s founders, as well as the winter 2006 edition, which includes a wonderful article about LAF’s 25 years of progress and precedents. If you would like to reprint these articles in your state or branch newsletter, please contact the LAF office for the text.

2006 Progress in Equity Award

Each year the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund's Progress in Equity Award recognizes a college or university program that has resulted in significant progress for women on campus.

In 2006, LAF awarded $5,000 to the University of Michigan-Dearborn's College Level Courses at the Scott Correctional Facility for Women. Through the program, professors volunteer to teach university-certified courses to women at Scott Prison. Through this program, women are given hope to overcome the obstacles life has placed before them and get a fresh start after they're released.

The University of Hawaii, Honolulu received an honorable mention for its Bridge of Hope program, which provides on-campus student employment and support programs for welfare recipients.

The PIE Award program is a critical part of the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund's proactive efforts to address sex discrimination on campus. LAF will continue to support valuable and innovative college/university programs, and is accepting nominations for the 2007 PIE award. Please submit your PIE applications by March 15, 2007.
