On Thursday, October, 19, 2006, the Accounting Society visited Deere & Company World Headquarters located in Moline, IL. Deere is the world's largest producer of farm equipment with facilities in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Russia, China and India. Deere has four major business segments: agricultural equipment manufactures and distributes a full line of farm equipment and related service parts; commercial and consumer equipment manufactures and distributes equipment, products and service parts for commercial and residential uses; construction and forestry manufactures, distributes and sells at retail a broad range of machines and service parts used in construction, earthmoving, material handling, and timber harvesting; and credit which primarily finances sales and leases by John Deere dealers of new and used agricultural equipment, commercial and consumer and construction and forestry equipment. Following a tour of the building, Stephen Kruse, Director of Finance: World Wide Agriculture Equipment gave a PowerPoint presentation titled "Measuring Value Creation at John Deere or How Accountants Add Value." Afterwards, he answered several questions including what other metrics John Deere utilized to measured performance prior to Shareholder Value Added (SVA), how the Enron scandal has affected the way John Deere does accounting and the benefits of becoming a certified public accountant or getting a master's degree. Finally, Amy Wagner, Head of College Recruiting, spoke to Accounting Society about internship and full-time employment opportunities. |
