Charles Speel

 

            Charles Speel, born November 22nd, 1916 in New York, was raised in New England, where his father was a Presbyterian minister He graduated from Brown University in 1939, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  In 1949 he earned a Bachelor of Sacred Theology at Harvard University, and a year later received a Masters of Sacred Theology.  In 1956 he received a Ph.D. degree from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  In 1951, while serving as the pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church of Cranston, he was invited by President James Grier Harper to join the Monmouth College faculty.  He taught a wide variety of courses in the Religion department, but was best known for his courses on the archaeology of the Bible and the  history of the Church. He was active in many church and academic groups around the world and was a member of a wide number of professional organizations.  Since retiring in 1986, Charles Speel worked on a history of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities in the United States.  He died.
