William Urban
William Urban came to Monmouth in 1966 after a year
as visiting assistant professor at the University of Kansas. His Ph.D.
was awarded by the University of Texas in 1967, with much of the
research done 1964-65 at the University in Hamburg, Germany. He became
chair of the history department in 1970 and worked closely with Mary
Crow and Doug Spitz for many years. From 1968 to 1981 he was coach of
the soccer club, then the varsity men’s team; later he assisted in
getting women’s soccer started; his players helped start the YMCA youth
soccer program. He was the founding advisor of ZBT, 1968-1974. He has
won several awards for books and articles: The Puskow Foundation for
The Livonian Crusade and “The Nationality of Balthasar Russow” in
the Journal of Baltic Studies, the Harry E. Pratt award of the
Illinois State Historical Society for “The People versus Nicholas Earp”,
and the Vitols Prize of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic
Studies for “Victims of the Baltic Crusade”; also the Burlington
Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award (the first given at
Monmouth College), ROTC Certificate of Appreciation (for developing the
required course on War and Peace—which also won a college award), ZBT
Citation of Merit. Corresponding Member of the Baltische Historische
Kommission and the Kommission für Ost- und Westpreussische
Landesforschung. Directed programs for the Associated Colleges of the
Midwest in Florence, Zagreb and Olomouc. Taught in Estonian Humanities
Institute in Tallinn and in the summer Cultural Studies Programs of
Eastern Michigan University across Europe. Received Fulbright senior
research grant, Deutscher Akademische
Austauschdienst (DAAD) grants, NEH grants, Global Awareness
program in Russia, West Point Military History Workshop. Published books
and articles on Baltic history, some of which have been translated (or
will be) into Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonia, Belarussian, Polish and
Hungarian.
