CATA News -- Extra!!

Internship Possibilities - Researched by Jill Springsteen

Graphic Design Internships
You must be a senior or about to enter your senior year of a four-year degree, and must be a graphic design major. The internship is unpaid, with the number of hours dictated by school requirements but not to exceed 14 hours per week. Goals for the internship include: speculative feature design, speculative cover design, assisting in the creation of ads and promotional pieces for the sales department, desktop scanning, color correction and image manipulation in Photoshop, photo research, assisting at a photo shoot, evaluating color proofs for press, and speculative design of circulation pieces. You should have an expressed interest in publication design and working knowledge of Photoshop, In Design and Mac OS X. Contact Maggie Kasprzak at 414-287-4302 or Maggie.Kasprzak@milwaukeemagazine.com to arrange a portfolio review. Contact should be made at least 3 weeks before the start of the applicable semester, but the internships are competitive so it is to your advantage to have your portfolio seen early in the process, as much as 8 weeks before the start of the semester.

Editorial Internships
Interested in being a Milwaukee Magazine editorial intern?
At Milwaukee Magazine, we give you a taste of everything, as well as a sense of the big picture. That means designing a well-rounded internship experience during which you work side by side with editors, writers, designers and photographers to get an inside look at how the magazine works.
  • Are you a slave to detail? A grammar guru? A word wizard? You'll spend some time working with our managing editor, honing your copy-editing and fact-checking skills.
  • Are you a private eye at heart? Do you enjoy looking past the front-page news to find the inside story? Then work with our Insider editor to dig up what's going on behind closed doors throughout the city.
  • Are you a trend-seeker? Write mini-reviews of the city's latest in everything.
  • Are you an organizer? Collect and sift through information on a long-term feature story project, working with top freelance writers and our editors.
You get the idea. Our semester- and summer-long internships give you hands-on experience. You'll be given assignments and deadlines. You'll accompany writers on interviews. You'll dig up public records and make phone calls. Interns are encouraged to take part in editorial meetings and offer opinions and story ideas. Milwaukee Magazine interns are not paid, but they trade their hard work for solid journalistic experience.

Past interns have gone on to work for Maxim, New York magazine, the Milwaukee mayor's office, a New York publishing house, the Associated Press, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Waukesha Freeman. Several have also returned to Milwaukee Magazine.

  Who is a Milwaukee Magazine intern?
Our interns are juniors or seniors in college, college graduates or graduate students. We may consider interns outside of these guidelines in certain circumstances. In most cases, interns earn college credit and need to demonstrate proof of this upon accepting the internship.

Prospective interns should have taken classes in reporting and writing for publication. They should be writing for a school or community newspaper or magazine and be able to supply at least five good writing samples (clips) of published work, not papers for an English class.

Interns should already have developed solid reporting skills they now want to practice and hone. They should be able to track people down, scour public records, conduct interviews and find information. They should possess strong grammar and spelling skills and be able to write in a variety of styles. Interns should demonstrate an eagerness to learn and an ability to build upon constructive criticism to improve their work.

  What is Milwaukee Magazine looking for in an intern?
We are looking for enthusiastic, determined, creative thinkers and hard workers who can spend 15 to 20 unpaid hours each week at the magazine for a semester or a summer. Periodically, there also may be secondary project-oriented internships that would last less than a semester or summer.

If you are able to work both independently and in a group, jump right into a project and think outside the box, you will fit in well.

What are the application deadlines and what should I send?
Milwaukee Magazine internships are competitive. Applicants should provide:

  1. a cover letter explaining why they want the internship and what they have to offer;
  2. a résumé with references;
  3. at least five clips of published work that best demonstrate their potential for magazine writing and reporting.
Questions and inquires should be directed to
Caroline Goyette, Assistant Editor
(414-287-4316, caroline.goyette@milwaukeemagazine.com).

Application packages should be mailed to:

Internship deadlines are as follows:

Fall: September 24
Spring: November 1

If you have missed a deadline or have not been selected for one of the semester- or summer-long programs, you may still submit an application. We may need additional interns for a month or so to assist with special projects during the semester or summer.
