Music Man

One of the most popular musicals to come out of the American theater scene in the last half century, Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” will march into the Monmouth College Wells Theater for four performances April 6-9.

The curtain will open for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m., while the Sunday performance is a 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets, which are $4 for Monmouth College students and staff, may be reserved by contacting Bill Wallace at 309-457-2374 or billw@monm.edu.

“The Music Man” debuted in 1957 with a story line and music that are as vibrant and popular today as they were to audiences then. It is the story of con man Harold Hill, played by junior Chris Walljasper of Donnellson, Iowa, who travels to the small town of River City, Iowa, to earn his fortune. But “there’s trouble in River City” as Hill, who even claims to be a professor of music, decides to convince the townspeople they need a boys’ band and then plans to run away once the boys have paid for instruments and uniforms.

Monmouth College Alum Actress

Actress shares 50th year with 'As the World Turns'

By Steve Gorman

While actors young enough to be her grandchildren come and go on television, soap opera veteran Helen Wagner has earned a place in the Guinness World Records by playing one role for 50 years.

The 87-year-old actress says the secret to her longevity as matriarch Nancy Hughes on the CBS daytime drama "As the World Turns" is simple.

"They kept offering me a contract, so I kept doing it. And they kept writing things for me, so I kept saying them," Wagner recounted in a recent interview. "I didn't think about leaving or not leaving."

She has portrayed the kindly but plain-spoken Nancy Hughes since "As the World Turns" debuted on April 2, 1956, and even uttered the show's very first line of dialogue (spoken to her TV husband): "Good morning dear, what would you like for breakfast?"

As the sole original cast member on the series, Wagner and her alter ego have witnessed more than their share of tragedy and star-crossed romance, sibling rivalries, marital infidelity and treachery. Nancy has grieved the deaths of her beloved TV daughter and first husband, remarried and endured the gradual fading of her second spouse due to Alzheimer' disease.

Wagner studied at Monmouth College in Illinois, earning degrees in dramatics and music. In New York, she continued her voice and piano training, gaining experience as a soloist in various church choirs. In 1988, her college alma mater awarded Wagner an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Wagner chaired a national committee that raised more than one million dollars to build a new theater at her college. At the new theater's opening night, Wagner reprised her role as Eleanor in The Lion In Winter in a production directed by her husband, Broadway producer Robert Willey.

MC Students head to the Ball Park

Sara Ingersoll, junior and Brooke Morgan, sophomore, is a Public Relations and Communication Double Major at Monmouth College. This summer she will be with the Peoria Chiefs as a Public Relations and Marketing Intern. Morgan will be doing a variety of jobs within the stadium. She will be working closely to the theme of the night by putting together the music, video clips, 7th inning events, speakers, and promotions for that particular night. Ingersoll will be living in Peoria with my brother five minutes away from the internship which pays $400 a month. Morgan will be commuting from Havana, Illinois which is about 45 minutes away from her internship, while working 60 hour weeks and driving that long, to and from work, should test her. This internship with the Peoria Chiefs is a paid Internship. She hopes to learn more about public relations and communications throughout this internship and see if this is the kind of job that she will want to pursue in the future.

Morgan has actually already started her job there. She goes in every Monday for two hours and will start official work the Monday after Monmouth College graduation and continue throughout the summer.

Morgan found out about the internship from a friend of the family that goes to all of the games. She is an avid sports fan and thought this would be a perfect summer job. She interviewed with Piper and Chip, the PR and Marketing people that work at the Peoria Chiefs. She was then happy to hear 1 1/2 weeks later that she had received the job. Morgan actually found out that she got the position when she was in Paris and happened to check her email the same day that they had wrote her.

Morgan is looking forward to this new experience with the Peoria Chiefs while getting the chance to watch them play every night. Morgan will be working with Sara Ingersoll, a fellow Monmouth College student. The two will be living together next year so this will be a great opportunity for them to get to know one another better.

MC Student to the Big Apple

Heather Prater, sophomore at Monmouth College, will be interning this summer with the Today Show in New York City. She will be working with the executive producers to help produce the show, write stories, do research, go on remote shoots, dub tapes, do street interviews etc. She will even be on the show modeling clothes or getting a make over or whatever they need. Prater will be living in downtown Manhattan. Through the website called studenthousing.org she found an apartment to stay in for her internship this summer. This organization gets colleges to rent rooms to them for the summer for interns and summer school students. She will be in a brand new 48 story high rise studio like apartments. Prater’s place is fully furnished with a full kitchen and bathroom along with 3 other room mates! Her apartment is only 4 blocks away from NBC so she will not have to travel far.

The internship does not pay, however if she needs to travel due to the show, travel is stipend. Prater will be there from May 31-August 16. Prater got the internship due to her 3.74 GPA and by being involved in many organizations. When she set her goals of working in NYC for the summer, the TODAY show was the first place she sent her resume and cover letter to. Within 2 months, she got a call saying they were very impressed with my resume and that they would love to interview me. Dr. Benita Dilley, Professor Kelly Schultz and Jill Springsteen and Prater took a trip to NYC over spring break and had an amazing time.

Prater stated that, "First and foremost, I want to prove to myself that I can stand on my own two feet and make it in one of the toughest and most competitive major cities. Secondly, I want to fully understand how a major news network operates and the daily struggles the show goes through to be 10 years running as the number one morning show. I want to see both the production and anchoring/reporter side of the news and make some great contacts. Overall, I am just really excited about this opportunity and I hope that I really leave my mark on NYC. I want to explore the rich culture and history of NYC, make some unforgettable friends and have the experience of a lifetime. I also want to give Monmouth College a good name in the Big Apple and come back with plenty of stories and advice for younger CATA majors who want to go into media and just aren't quite sure how to go about their dreams."
