Events and News from CATA Kyle Christensen selected for Honors Conference For Immediate Release: March 2008 Kyle Christensen, MC 09 and Junior CATA major, recently had a paper accepted to the 16th Annual Clement S. Stacy Undergraduate Research Conference at Purdue University Calumet.
The paper is entitled “Three Lined Society: An Application of George Herbert Mead’s Theory of Symbolic Interactionism to the Art of Traditional Japanese Haiku Poetry.” In its opening abstract, Christensen states that by relating Mead’s social communication theory to the traditional Japanese haiku poetry art community, “one may begin to explore the stylistic rituals and customs associated with [a] specific artform… [and] discern how a poetic artform’s established, generic impositions may affect how artists or audiences view the world around them through the poetic lens and/or influence how they …may set out to produce their own original compositions.”
This paper was completed as part of an independent study project during the fall 2007 semester, under the supervision of Professor Trudi K. Peterson.
Along with Christensen, five other Monmouth College humanities students have been selected to present at this undergraduate honors conference, which will be held on April 4-5, 2008 at the campus of Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana.
