Reflection Writing Assignment

Due date: November 2 (Wednesday.),  3pm  (by email)

Assignment: This activity and assignment for Junior Colloquium is to help you learn to write igh quality reflection statements that represent thoughtful self-evaluation and that can be used in your COMM portfolio.

  • Begin this project by reviewing some resource materials below to understand what the COMM faculty expect of a good reflection statement and to see some good examples.

  • Now that you are familiar with our expectations and have seen some good examples of reflection statements, create a first draft of one or two good refections on artifacts that you selected in your portfolio planning document for inclusion in your portfolio.  You will need to use artifacts you have completed already.

For inspiration, you might take a look at some of the reflections statements that last year’s seniors, such as Cassie Hart and Sybille Rizzoli, used in their portfolios

Bring your sample reflection statements to class on Wednesday, October 26.

  • In class, you will find a partner and, just as you did in ENGL 110,  you andyour partner will "workshop" each other's reflections.  Each of you will read the other's reflection statement(s).  Using the check sheet provided, critque your partner's reflection and offer suggestions as to how the statement can be improved.
    • Key elements to comment on:

      • Has the author identified the objectives section and the requirement the artifact is intended to illustrate?
      • Has the author introduced the reflection statement by providing a context for how and why the artifact was created?
      • Is the author using professional communication terms and concepts to discuss what is good about the artifact?
      • Is the author using specific support material (e.g. "In looking at my artifact you can see that ...") to prove that the artifact really does illustrate the communication terms and concepts of good quality the author claims it does?
Exchange ideas with each other and discuss how to improve your reflections.

  • Finally, after the workshop session, edit and improve your the reflection(s) you worked on in class.  Send a revised version of your reflection statements, by email, to Professor McGaan for grading and feedback by the date shown above.

  • Take some time in the next few days to SAVE artifacts you currently have into your portfolio!!
