The final Exam in CATA 101 will consist of two parts: 25-30 "objective" questions (multiple choice and short answer) covering material from throughout the semester , and an essay portion involving the 4 questions shown below to be answered in relation to the manuscript of speech which was given in a college public speaking class. Some of the objective questions will be taken from the mid-term exam and some will be new but on familiar material, esp. material on public speaking. A study guide for the objective questions can be found here .
Write answers to the following four questions
asking you to critically evaluate the
speech manuscript distributed at the time of the exam. In
evaluating this speech, assume it was for the persuasive speech assignment like
the one you just completed, presented to a college level speech class similar
to ours. Your answer should discuss
each of the following issues in SEPARATE SECTIONS AND IN DETAIL. Label
each section. A). Identify the thesis
and specific purpose of the speech in relation to the
audience this speaker faced. Given what
you know of persuasive speeches, are the speaker's choices wise? (15pts.) B). Discuss the
organizational strategy of the speech. What is
the thought pattern and is it effective?
Are the main points appropriate and well-phrased. Does the speaker use
transitions and internal summaries well? Is the introduction effective?
Is the conclusion effective? (30 pts.) C). Discuss and
evaluate the use of support material.
List and identify all types of support material used (cite examples) and
evaluate the variety and quality of this support and the speaker's
sources. (25 pts.) D.) Assume that the
speaker made a thoughtful analysis of
the audience. Based on what was said in
the speech, indicate the beliefs, values, and motives
the speaker wanted the audience to hold by the end of his presentation. How effective was his use of the
“rational model” was? (30 pts.) REMEMBER: Your task is to both describe
AND
evaluate in each section of your answer. Thus, you should talk about strengths and weaknesses of the
speech in each section of your answer in addition to describing. |
