The exam will be composed of questions and topics taken from the material described below.  Nothing will appear on the test that is not mentioned on the study guide.  Items shown in ALL CAPS may be given in the form of objective questions (e.g. fill in the blank, multiple choice, etc.).

 

1.  Describe (OR IDENTIFY) THE METAPHOR AND THE MAJOR ELEMENTS for each of the four models of communication.  Why is it worth knowing the elements of all four models if only one is most accurate?  ( Ch. 1 and handout and notes)

 

2.  BE ABLE TO DEFINE THE TERMS MICRO-STRUCTURE AND MACRO- STRUCTURE LISTING AND DEFINING THE COMPONENT PARTS of each.    (Web handout and notes)

 

3.  BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY and / or  DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS in a sentence or two and give examples where appropriate:          (variously in notes and text)

4.  BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY EFFECTIVE GUIDELINES FOR USING VISUAL AIDS AND DISTINGUISH THEM FROM INEFFECTIVE VISUAL AIDS

 

5.  List and explain the parts of a speech as defined by the AMTOBUL model.

 

6.  DESCRIBE THE THREE STEPS IN THE PERCEPTION PROCESS.  How can these steps be used to explain instances of miscommunication (like misunderstandings that occurred with the "robber" story)?            ( Ch. 2 and handout and notes )

 

7.  Describe (OR IDENTIFY) each of THE THREE GENERAL PURPOSES of public speaking.

 

8.  Discuss what sorts of materials can and should be included in introductions and conclusions.

 

9.  Describe why it is valuable to gain experience in doing research, including library research.

 

10.  Discuss the difference between informative and persuasive speaking (purposes).
