The exam will be composed of questions and topics taken
from the material described below. Nothing will appear on the
test that is not mentioned on the study guide. Items shown in ALL CAPS may be given
in the form of objective questions (e.g. fill in the blank, multiple choice,
etc.).
1. DESCRIBE THE THREE STEPS IN THE PERCEPTION PROCESS. How can these steps be used to explain instances of miscommunication (like misunderstandings that occurred with the "robber" story)? ( Ch. 2 and handout and notes )
2. How does a person's self concept develop? Where do we learn the information that makes up our self concept?
3. BE ABLE
TO IDENTIFY and / or DEFINE THE
FOLLOWING TERMS in a sentence or two and give examples where appropriate: (variously in notes and textbook) communication, self-serving bias, self-fulfilling prophecy, self image, self esteem, noise, encode, decode, positive feedback, negative feedback, selective perception, stereotypes, inductive argument, deductive argument, support, assertion, claim, ground, warrant.
4. Define listening and describe at least three obstacles that can interfere with successful listening.
5. Assuming the topic we were interested in is how the troop "surge" in Afghanistan is going, how would the source reliability/appropriateness tests above apply to these three sources: 1) General Petraeus' testimony before Congress, 2) An editorial in the New York Times, 3) Osama bin Laden's recent audio statement. 6. BE ABLE TO DEFINE THE TERMS MICRO-STRUCTURE AND MACRO- STRUCTURE LISTING AND DEFINING THE COMPONENT PARTS of each. (Web handout and notes)
7. List and explain the parts of a speech as defined by the AMTOBUL model. 8. List and explain the steps in the "Three Step Process" for using support effectively.
