Film: A Critical Introduction. ISBN: 0205433480 by Pramaggiore and Wallis

Another Opening, Another Show (2nd Edition) ISBN: 0072562609 by Tom Markus and Linda Sarver

A course designed to give the beginning student a critical platform on which to base his or her own evaluation of plays and films. Selected reading of play scripts, film scenarios, and general criticism is supplemented by planned viewing experiences in both art forms. Includes Laboratory.

2. Course Objectives:

To use language to discuss production concepts effectively whether as an actor, director, critic, designer or technician.

To describe the effects on an audience of a theatrical production or film resulting from artistic choices of author, director, designers and actors

To demonstrate familiarity with historical and contemporary context (e.g. political, cultural, social) of dramatic literature and film
To encourage and develop your appreciation of dramatic art whether it is viewed on the stage, screen, or tube.

To gain a working knowledge of genres and terminology of dramatic art and cinema.
To develop competence in criticism of dramatic art
