Communication Studies Registration Information for 2010-2011 Applications for COMM Independent Studies and Internships for Summer or Fall 2010 are due April 22 by email to Lee McGaan. All necessary information and forms for internships and independent studies may be found through links on the Internship web page. For application information concerning Public Relations Internships, contact Professor Wallace. If you plan on completing a COMM or PUBR internship in the next year, please put your name on the appropriate course wait-list and, when your application is approved, you will receive notice that you may move from the waitlist into registered status. Please note below several issues of importance for registering COMM majors or other students interested in COMM classes.
1. Required courses for COMM Junior and Senior majors. Please be sure that rising COMM Junior majors enroll in COMM 321 - Junior Colloquium (Fall). Students enrolling in COMM 321 should be planning to graduate between Fall 2011 and Summer 2012. Please be sure that rising COMM Senior majors enroll in both COMM 421 - Senior Colloquium (Fall) and COMM 491 - Freedom of Expression and Communication Ethics (our senior seminar and capstone course, Spring). ONLY those students planning to graduate between Fall 2010 and Summer 2011 should enroll in COMM 421.
2. COMM/PUBR Double majors may take either COMM 491 or PUBR 491 as their senior seminar capstone course. Also, COMM/PUBR double majors make complete the internship requirement for both majors with a single internship under either COMM or PUBR. If you have questions on advising for COMM majors, please call Prof. Lee McGaan at school (457-2155) or at home (734-5431).
3. It is important for rising Sophomore COMM majors (that is current Freshmen) to register for COMM 230: Introduction to Communication Studies in the Fall and COMM 261 - Mass Media and Society either semester. Both courses are now required of all COMM majors. COMM 230: Introduction to Communication Studies is an introduction to the breadth of the field of communication studies (including media, communication, and theatre arts). It acquaints students with general, thematic, and contextual theories of human communication to provide a more thorough understanding of communication processes in multiple contexts.
4. Please be aware the COMM 367 - Layout and Design is now offered in the FALL ONLY. COMM 367 is required for the PUBR major. COMM 365- Media Production is now offered in the SPRING ONLY and is a requirement for the COMM major.
5. COMM Workshop Courses. Several workshops (including all 200-level workshops) require instructor permission for registration. Contact Lee McGaan for permission to add COMM 113/213. Contact Jane Carlson to add COMM 214, Adv. Workshop: Print Media.
Students interested in receiving credit for participation in WMCR radio should register for COMM 115, Radio and students interested in receiving credit for participation in our campus cable TV programming on MC-TV should register for COMM 116, Television. Students enrolled in COMM 116 will participate in the production of the MC-TV cable news program. Students interested in working on entertainment programming and videos should sign up for COMM 216 (permission and previous credit in COMM 116 required). Contact Chris Goble for permission to add COMM 215/216.
All COMM workshop courses may be repeated for credit up to a total of 3 credit hours for 100-level workshops or 8 credit hours for 200-level workshops.
