Internships

Applications for Internships and Independent Studies planned for Spring of 2012 are due by November 28 to Professor Lee McGaan at lee@monm.edu

Internships are an integral part of the COMM major. All COMM majors are required to complete an internship experience (or an independent study).  Take a look at what some of our 2012 COMM Seniors have done for internships or independent studies.  Or check out internships from the class of 2011 or the class of 2010.

Internships can be taken in a large variety of job settings including such areas as marketing, human relations, training and development, journalism, broadcasting, arts management, public relations. Creative internships can also be arranged by a student in consultation with the Department. Take a look at our "Overview of the Internship Process" and frequently asked questions.

A student who will have at least 59 semester hours by the time of the internship (and who has completed a substantial part of the COMM major) should submit an application for internship by the established deadline (see above) during of the semester preceding the desired internship.

Currently, applications should be sent to Prof. Lee McGaan electronically. The COMM faculty will review the application and notify the student of their decision before the end of the semester. The application process results in the approval of a student as eligible for a COMM sponsored internship. It is not approval of the particular internship site itself.

Thus students are encouraged to apply for an internship even if they do not yet have a clear idea of where or what the internship may be. COMM faculty are always willing to assist students in beginning a search for internship sites and they may be a useful source of leads. You may find it useful to examine the list of past COMM Internships.

[In completing the application sections that ask you to list skills of potential interest to an internship site and asking you to describe your learning goals for the internship, you may find the "List of Skills Often Developed by COMM Majors" a useful document to review and use for generating ideas about goals.]

If you are searching for a communication or media internship off-campus, we have an Internship Search page of useful links that may help you find just what you are looking for.  Or talk to any COMM faculty member.

An internship is normally for three semester hours of credit. For three credit hours we typically expect between 125 and 150 on-site hours (about eight to ten hours per week during a typical 15 week semester).  Increased on-site hours can earn a student more credit hours; however, students hoping to receive more than three credit hours for an internship should arrange for the additional credit in advance of beginning work at the site.

Evaluation of internships requires the submission of "Final Materials" after completion of the required number of intershiphours.  Please review our Guidelines on Preparing Final Materials. These materials include:

  • An internship contract with your internship site supervisor and your internship faculty sponsor. This contract should be completed within ten days of beginning the internship and submitted to the internship coordinator (with signed copies to the site supervisor and faculty sponsor).

  • A COMM Internship Activities Log) of daily activities and hours on-site and off.

  • A portfolio of created/finished activities to the faculty sponsor after completion of the internship.

  • An abstract describing the internship (previous year's abstracts)

  • A "Press Release" announcing completion of the internship (sample press relase)

  • A "poster" from presenting information about the internship

  • A Self Reflection and Evaluation essay based on the internship experience

  • A written evaluation from the on-site internship advisor using the COMM Internship Evaluation form

Publications and documents created, photographs of the work site, descriptions of work and other materials are often used as artifacts for COMM Professional Portfolio purposes.

For further information regarding internships, contact Prof. Lee McGaan, Internship Coordinator and Chair.
