Fairy Penguins at Phillips Island. These little birds stand only 12 inches high when fully grown. They mate for life and live about 7 years. I did not take these photos; they are from tourism brochures. Personal photos are forbidden during the penguin viewing because flashes can blind the penguins permanently. These are the smallest species of penguin and are actually dark blue and white rather than black and white. Each evening they come ashore on Phillips Island--at dusk and into the night--usually in groups of 25 or 30 to return to their burrows. They travel in groups and in the dark to avoid predators. You may read more about them and see a picture that shows their blue color at http://www.antarcticconnection.com/antarctic/wildlife/penguins/fairy.shtml .
