There are several different types of human growth hormone

First Use of HGH
In 1959, stunted children were given HGH to help them grow. (News Article) Before the great technology that doctors have today, they would have to extract the HGH out of human cadavers.  The only thing weird about this is that the human cadavers would be dead.  The cadavers used were from Africa.  This technique was used until the mid 80's because of lack of technology.  The main problem with using this technique is because a rare disease called Creutzfeld-Jacob disease was found in the HGH that was removed from the cadavers.  This technique was pulled off the market due to this problem.

1. HGH produced naturally in the body:  The anterior pituitary gland stimulates the release of somatomedin from the liver, which in return promotes growth in the body.  The HGH hormone is made up of 191 amino acids.  The amount of hormones released by the glands depends on the bodies need for it.  The pituitary gland is part of the endocrine system, which releases hormones directly into the capillaries and take it to the blood. 
    
2. Recombinant Human Growth Hormone (Somatropin):  Recombinant HGH was first started by scientists at Genentech, Inc. of San Francisco, Calif., in  late in 1979. In 1985 the Eli Lily pharmaceutical company managed to synthetically copy the DNA of somatropin (hgh) human growth hormone exactly. In Oct. 1985, FDA approved the first recombinant human growth hormone.  What the scientists do is splice human genes and then clone it.  Then they take it to the lab and produce more of it to put on the market.  The genetically engineered recombinant somatropin (hgh) human growth hormone is completely identical to the somatropin (hgh) human growth hormone naturally produced in the human body.
    
3. Human Growth Hormone Enhancers (secretagogue):  This type is in a synthetic injectable form that has to be given to a patient through doctor prescription.  This type is can be very dangerous if not taken in the proper amounts.  Another form of enhancers is in the pill form.  These forms are usually sold on the internet because this form doesn't a doctor's prescription.  A third form is HGH spray.  It is taken in by spraying the liquid form into your mouth on the tongue.  There is little evidence shown to prove its effectiveness.
