Relationship to Biotechnology

This course is based on moral and ethic approaches to the study of science, issues regarding biotechnology today and its impact on society, and human values.  HGH has really had an impact on society.  The use of technology has improved children's ability to grow and achieve normal height.  The use of technology has allow doctors to be able to clone the protein and be able to produce more of it to allow children a chance to live a normal live.  This technology has had a great impact on improving the chances of overcoming diseases (short stature).  Without the use of this technology, children and adults would have to suffer from their short height emotionally and physically.

HGH has really had an effect of doctors', coaches', and athletes' morals, values, and ethics. Doctors have to decided if it is right to give an athlete the treatments to help their performance.  Coaches and athletes have to decided if it is worth taking. The moral issue for doctors are presented with a problem (does this person need HGH).  He/she will have to decided based on their values to come to a decision.  Then they have to think about the consequences on the actions they take.  Is this ethical?  Coaches go through the same process.  They have to figure out a way to help their athlete.  The coach needs to find out as much as he/she can about different training methods for the athlete.  Then they have to decide if it is worth cheating to win.

The decisions made by everyone reflect their human values.  These values reflect on how they carry themselves.  If a doctor gives out the HGH to an athlete, this says that he/she would involve themselves in corruption.  When a coach decides to cheat, then it puts off the reflection that he/she will do anything to win.  Being labeled a cheater is not a good thing to be labeled.  The values of athletes are protrayed in the media.  If the athlete takes the HGH, then he/she will have a bad rap.  He/she will be labeled as a cheater.
