MY PERSONAL INTEREST

Ever since I can remember, athletics have been a major part of my life. Even today, as I am captain of the Monmouth College tennis team I am affected my all of the issues surrounding technology in the field of athletics. I have a close association with both of the topics presented in this site as the both have profound affects on my life.

The issue of Tommy John surgery affects me because throughout my years of playing sports I was prevalent in both baseball and tennis. Baseball didn't affect my arm as much as tennis has but I would imagine that it has had an impact on the current condition of my elbow. Throughout high school and college I have battled shoulder (rotator cuff) and elbow (tennis elbow) problems. My tennis serve, as it is a repeated motion, has worn down the tendons in my rotator cuff and half way through my junior year I had to lob my serve because I was in great pain if I hit it hard. The recent developments in Tommy John surgery could help me in the future if I am to tear one of the ligaments in my shoulder or elbow and therefore it is good that I am well informed on the topic.

Genovations, while it will have an impact on other people, not just athletes, has an impact on me because of my experience with athletics and my plan to continue my athletic career once I leave college. While I should be eating right now, it is my hope that in the future the foods that I enjoy eating will become healthier through genetic technologies. In addition to this, diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and alzheimer's cannot be predicted and may affect me in the future. Through the mapping of my genetic information, I would now have the ability to find out if I am susceptible to these diseases and can either delay their onset or prevent them via supplements and certain types of foods. This is not an issue of who will be affected by this revolution because it is going to affect all of us in the future, and in a very positive way.
