TOMMY JOHN SURGERY
WARNINGS TO YOUNG PITCHERS
Number of surgeries has doubled since the 1990's.
Many are performed on amateur athletes in their teens.
Risk of torn tendon increases with: more pitches per game, more pitches per season, more curveballs and sliders thrown.
Nearly every adult pitcher--and many youth pitchers--have sustained an elbow or shoulder injury at some point in their career.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR COACHES
A. 75 pitches per game
B. 600 pitches per season
C. 15 batters per game (five pitches per batter)
