INTG-408 Citizenship: Consumerism and Civic Duty
Instructor: Simon Cordery
INTG 408, Consumerism and Civic Duty, invites students to examine two
linked aspects of daily life often taken for granted, the consumption of
material goods and our roles as citizens. This course sits at the
intersection of citizenship and consumption. By discussing assigned
readings and bringing readings to class, we will come to understand
something of the history and current practices connecting what we buy
with how we act in a democracy. Above all, you will be encouraged to
pay particular attention to how citizenship and the consumption of goods
reinforce, undermine, and/or complement each other. The course is
guided by two main questions. First, what makes a responsible
consumer-citizen? Second, what constitutes a sustainable consumer
society and, in the enactment and furtherance of such, what are the
duties of citizens?
Course Objectives and Projects
In the fall of 2008, this class will meet on
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m.
