You should identify a significant event in Roman history or culture related to each of each of the following places (written in capital letters) and be able to locate each place on a map of the Mediterranean world for a Map/Geography Quiz. ACHAEA
The Roman Province in southern Greece

AEGYPTUS
The Roman Province of Egypt.

AFRICA
The Roman Province located in what is now Tunisia and Algeria

ALEXANDRIA
location of a major library

AQUINCUM
modern Budapest, Hungary

ARLETUM
major city in Roman France; modern Arles in France

ANTIOCHIA
There were several cities by this name, all referring to the Antiochid rulers of what is now Syria. The most important of these Antiochs is Antioch-on-the-Orontes in what is now Turkey.

ATHENS
politically insignificant in Roman times, Athens remained important for intellectual reasons during the Roman Empire

the modern city of Triers, Germany

BILBILIS
birthplace of poet Martial in Spain

the Roman province of what is now England

the Greek city of Byzantium refounded as Constantinople by the emperor Constantine as the new capital of the Roman Empire

modern Corduba, Spain

CORINTH
destroyed by Mummius in 146 B.C.
rebuilt by Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.

CYRENAICA
Roman Province in what is now Libya

DACIA
modern Romania
Emperor Trajan led campaign into this region

DAMASCUS
major commercial city of Roman Empire

DELPHI
sanctuary of Apollo

DURA-EUROPUS
an important trading city on the Euphrates River

EMERITA AUGUSTA
modern city of Merida in Spain

EPHESUS
major city in Roman province of Asia
