The theme of CLAS230 Classical Mythology this semester
is
"Classical Mythology in Epic." In this course we will survey
the Iliad and the
Odyssey of Homer and Vergil's Aeneid as myths. We will examine the way
that myths about gods and heroes are treated in these epics. We will also
consider the ways that these myths have been interpreted by modern
artists and scholars. Some of the questions addressed in this course include:
What are the heroic characteristics of the epic hero? What is the role
of the gods in epic? What is the role of women in this epic world? What
meanings do these epics have for the modern world?
