THEME: SURVEY and TRAGIC VISION

The theme of CLAS230 Classical Mythology this semester a survey of Greek and Roman mythology with an emphasis on its tragic vision. The course begins with discussion of the nature of myth and ways of interpreting myth. It then moves to an examination of the Greek creation myth, the portrayal of goddess, the Greek deities, humankind, oracles, Dionysus, the Underworld, the hero, the Trojan War and the Returns. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between myth and tragedy. Finally, there will be units on Roman myth and later treatments of Greek myths in literature, film, and music.
