Welcome to the
Educational Studies Department and
our Campus Chapter of IEA

Our Campus Chapter of IEA exemplifies the principles of community and empowerment that characterize the Monmouth College Teacher Education Program.  Since its inception, members of IEA have traveled to the state conference, where they have gained insight into current issues, networked with other pre-service teachers, retired  teachers, and other professionals, and taken part in professional development workshops. Some travel support is available to MC IEA members in order to attend these conferences.

Here on campus, officers meet to plan programs, from films to service projects to guest speakers. In the past, programming has included a Q&A session with current student teachers, jointly hosted by KDP.

For more membership about how you can join, contact faculty adviser Dr. Tom Sargent at tsargent@monm.edu. Empower yourself; empower others.

Benefits of Membership:

  • Dues Rebate After Graduation: A $20 rebate (up to $80 total) is available for IEA Student Program members as they enter the profession and become active, teaching members of the IEA in various school districts throughout the state.
  • Many Publications: Student members receive many publications distributed to practicing teachers and members. These include NEA Today and The Advocate.  Both are excellent resources for any preprofessional.  In addition, the IEA Student Program Officers write a newsletter called Student Speak that all student members will receive at least once a semester.
  • Professional Development workshops: Campus meetings often include workshops, guest speakers, and panels of practicing educators and school administrators.
  • NEA Grants: Student members have an opportunity to write grants and to receive up to $1000 per project for activities in local schools and communities. Community service is a great way to get involved locally and provide valuable experience to you for your future career in teaching.
  • Mentoring Program: The IEA/NEA Student Program and the IEA/NEA Retired Program combined efforts to offer a mentoring program to students who are entering the field of education.  This program offers students the opportunity to work with a retired teacher in a mentoring relationship and there is a new online component this year called the Living Library, which is an electronic filing cabinet with lesson plans, classroom ideas and more, all ready for you to use and implement in your own classroom. Students are paired with mentors each fall.
  • Student Scholarships: The IEA Student Program awards eight $1000 scholarships each spring. The application process in relatively easy and the $1000 can be used for almost any educational need identified by the recipient.
  • Mini-résumés: Our office will ask students who are graduating to complete a job survey form. The information is then compiled and disturbed to all superintendents in the state of Illinois.
  • Liability Insurance: Each student member receives one million dollars in insurance liability.
  • You get to meet a lot of other future teachers from other schools and it is possible that you may work with some of these individuals at you school. It is a great way to make connections with people!
  • Benefits of membership listed above taken from "IEA Student Benefits," distributed to campus leaders at an advisory board meeting.
