Grading Policy:

1. Your grade in this class will be calculated on point scale, as follows. This gives you a large number of chances to influence your grade, which will help you.

1A.  You may substitute an interview for the Ruiz paper, the Mobley paper, or the Skiba paper.  You'll still have to read the books, because exam questions will come from there.  However, if you know a WWII or Iraq War veteran or if you are close to someone who was touched in some way by the murder of Emmett Till, then you may conduct an interview rather than write the take-home book exam.  The interview must last at least 30 minutes.  It must be in a format that I am able to hear or see (check with me on the format before you begin).  The interview that you hand in to me must be accompanied by your list of questions, by a release form, and by a photograph of you with the person you interviewed.  If you interview a veteran, the conversation must be about their military service and you must include questions that show that you have read the pertinent book.  If you interview somone about Emmett Till, the conversation must be about that murder and its effects on your interviewee's life.  Someone who can just ruminate on the changes since the 1950s will not be acceptable.  No student may choose this option to substitute until it has been cleared by me in advance.

2. The professor reserves the right to give pop quizzes during the semester over any of the material covered--lectures, textbook, monographs. The point value of the class will reflect the total number of points possible, including pop quizzes, if they are given.

3. Late papers of any sort will be docked one grade for each day late, including weekend days. All four book exams are due at the beginning of class on the day listed, and will be counted late if you enter class after the lecture begins. All papers may be e-mailed to me, but if you don’t receive a note back from me saying that I’ve got your paper, then consider that I do not have it, and follow up with me. It is up to the student to make sure the professor has the paper. Further, it is always in the student’s best interest to retain a copy of every paper handed in, so please do so.

4.  Plagiarism is intellectual theft.  It has no place in an institution of higher learning.  I follow the Monmouth College policy on plagiarism, found here.  If you plagiarise, you will earn a zero for that assignment.  If you plagiarise twice, you will earn a zero for the course (in other words, a WF).  Your name will go on file with the Academic Dean.  Be aware that plagiarism can result in dismissal from the College.  Ask me if you have any questions about citing.
