Varieties of 19th Century Reform
1. Choose a topic connected with some sort of
reform in which women engaged in the late nineteenth and/or early twentieth
centuries, and clear it with me.
It's yours when your name appears here.
2. Go to the Chicago Tribune from the Hewes Library page and
research your topic. If your topic states that you may consult the New
York Times it's because generally yours is New York topic. It
might be interesting to see what the Chicago Tribune has to say about
your topic, however, and it might be possible to do your New York topic strictly
from the Tribune.
3. Choose no fewer than five articles on your topic to form the nucleus of
your paper.
4. Write a report on your subject, based only on the Chicago Tribune
articles.
a. The report should be specific as to dates, events,
places, and people.
b. Try to choose articles that tell an interesting
story when put together.
c. Use footnotes to cite your articles--not
intra-textual cites. See here for help footnoting.
d. Attach all the newspaper articles
you have used to your paper when you hand it in or the paper will not be graded.
e. This paper will be graded on your good choice of
articles, the story you tell with them, your flawless grammar, and your
compelling prose.
5. Ideally, your topic will concentrate on the Gilded Age and/or the
Progressive Era--but remember that sometimes the microcosmic view of history is
best. In other words, you may choose one incident and follow it to its
end, rather than, for example, tracing cholera over a century.
6. There is no page limit on this assignment. Have fun and do a good
job.
7. The assignment--with a bibliography and the newspaper articles attached--is due Monday, 22 October 2007. IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU MUST TURN THIS ASSIGNMENT IN TO THE SECRETARY IN THE BASEMENT OF WALLACE HALL BY 4:00 P.M. She will date and time stamp it, and initial it. If you hand it in past 4:00 p.m., it will drop one letter grade.
Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to consult with you about the topic.
