What is Moodle?

Moodle is a free, open-source, course management system that has been installed on a Monmouth College network to enhance teaching and learning at the college. Moodle is completely web-based and can be accessed from anywhere in the world.

At Monmouth College, we are referring to the MC Moodle as an LMS (Learning Management System), stressing the importance of teaching and learning.

How do I access Moodle?

To access Moodle, go to the Monmouth College home page http://www.monm.edu and then click on the Moodle link, shown circled below, at the bottom of the page.

How do I request a Moodle course?

To request a Moodle course, go to http://www.monm.edu/moodle.htm and submit the online form. You will be notified via e-mail when your course is ready (usually within 24 hours of your request).

Every time I try to download a file from Moodle, Internet Explorer blocks it. How do I fix this?

To turn off the automatic blocking of file downloads in Internet Explorer, add http://lms.monm.edu to your list of trusted Web sites in Internet Explorer. (For more information, see Internet Explorer Blocks File Downloads.)

I'm having trouble viewing files in Moodle from off campus. What should I do?

If you have trouble opening a PowerPoint, Word, or other Microsoft Office file in Moodle from off campus, then save it to your desktop first and open the file from there.

To save a file from Moodle to your desktop, click on the file on the course home page. Then, on the File Download window, click on the Save button.

Note: If you do not have the Microsoft Office program needed to open the file, then you'll need to download a free viewer from Microsoft. Links to the PowerPoint, Word, and Excel viewers are below. (For more information, see Can't View Files from Off Campus.)

Course Settings

How do I change the course format?

To change the course format, go into the course settings, click on the Format down arrow, and select the desired format. (To access the course settings, click on Settings in the Administration block.)

How do I add more weeks or topic sections to my course?

To add more weeks or topic sections to your course, go into the course settings, click on the Number of weeks/topics down arrow, and select the desired number of week or topics. (To access the course settings, click on Settings in the Administration block.)

What is the largest file size that can be uploaded to my course?

Currently, the largest file size that can be uploaded to your course is 100 MB. To change the file upload size for your course, go into the course settings, click on the Maximum file upload size down arrow, and select the desired value. (To access the course settings, click on Settings in the Administration block.)

Course Access

Can anyone access my Moodle course?

By default, any Monmouth College student, faculty member, or staff member can access your course. If you want to restrict access to only the students who are registered for your course, then you can use an enrollment key. (For more information, see Create an Enrollment Key.)

If you want guests to be able to access to your course, then go into the course settings, click on the Guest access down arrow, and select the desired setting. (To access the course settings, click on Settings in the Administration block.)

How do I enroll students in my Moodle course?

To enroll students in your course, click on Assign Roles in the Administration block. (For more information, see Enroll or Unenroll Students.)

How I can I restrict enrollment so that only the students who are registered for my class may enroll in it?

To help restrict enrollment, you can use an enrollment key. Then, after all of your students have enrolled, you can change the enrollment key and not give it out to anyone. (For more information, see Create an Enrollment Key.)

How do I remove a student from my Moodle course?

To uneroll a student from your course, click on Assign Roles in the Administration block. Then, click on Student, select the student's name from the column on the left side of the page, and then click on the right arrow Right Arrow Button button to move the student to list of potential users column on the right side of the page.

How do I give a colleague access to my course?

To give a colleague access to your course, go into the course settings, create an enrollment key, and then change the Guest access setting to Allow guests who have the key. (To access the course settings, click on Settings in the Administration block.)

Files

How do I upload a file and make it accessible to my students?

I uploaded a lot of files to my Moodle course. How can I organize them?

To help keep your files organized on the Moodle sever, you can use folders.

To create a folder, click on Files in the Administration block. Then, click on the Make a folder button.

To move a file into a folder, put a checkmark in the checkbox to the left of the file name, click on the With chosen files down arrow and select Move to another folder. Then, click on the folder to which you want to move the file and click on the Move to here button.

Grading

How do I enter a grade for an activity?

Open the activity by clicking on it on your course home page. Then, click on the activity's View [number] of submitted assignments link in the upper-right hand corner of the page and click on a student's Grade link.

When I enter grades, I have to open a new window for each student. Is there a quicker way to enter grades?

Yes. Turn on quick grading by putting a checkmark in the Allow quick grading checkbox at the bottom of the grading page and then clicking the Save preferences button.

I opened my gradebook and it says "No grades returned."

Your gradebook will display "No grades returned" when you do not have any graded activities added to your course. Once you add a graded activity, you will be able to open your gradebook and view student names, etc.

Course Backups

Do I need to back up my course?

Yes! For more information, see Backing Up Your Course.

End of Semester

It's the end of the semester. What do I need to do with my course?

You should:

  • Back up your course(s) and save a copy of your backup
    files(s) on your computer. For more information, see Back Up Your Course(s).
     
  • Download your gradebook(s) to Excel and save the Excel
    file(s) on your computer. For more information, see Download Your Gradebook(s) to Excel.
     
  • Make your course unavailable to students. For more information, see Make Your Course Unavailable to Students.
