Overview

Moodle has a messaging system that you can use to send messages to students enrolled in your course.

New messages appear in the Messages block, shown below.

You and your students can have copies of Moodle messages sent to your Monmouth College (or other) e-mail account when you are not logged in to Moodle. (For more information, see Configure Your Messaging Settings.)

If you want to use Moodle's messaging system, then you will need to add the Messages block to your course home page. (For more information, see Add the Messages Block to Your Course Home Page.)

Add the Messages Block to Your Course Home Page

  1. Click on the Turn editing on button in the upper-right corner of your course home page.
  2. In the Blocks block, shown below, click on the Add... down arrow and select Messages.

Send a Message to Students in Your Course

  1. In the People block on your course home page, click on Participants.

  2. Click on the Select all button at the bottom of the page.
  3. Click on the With selected users... down arrow and select Add/Send message.

  4. Click on the OK button.
  5. Type your message.
  6. Click on the Preview button at the bottom of the page.
  7. Click on the Send button.

Open and Reply to a Message

To open a new message, click on the number next to the envelope icon across from the sender's name.|

The message appears in a pop-up window, as shown below.

To reply to the message, type your message and then click on the Send message button.

Configure Your Messaging Settings

Your Moodle messaging settings include:

  • Automatically show Message window when I get new messages.
  • Block all new messages from people who are not on my contact list.
  • Beep when a new message comes in.
  • Use HTML editor.
  • Version without frames and JavaScript.
  • Email messages when I am offline.

To configure your messaging settings:

  1. In the Messages block, click on Messages.

  2. Click on the Settings tab.

  3. Configure your messaging settings as desired.

  4. Click on the Save my settings button.
