Internet Explorer Blocks File Downloads from Moodle

When you attempt to download a file from Moodle, Internet Explorer may block it and display the Information bar, shown circled below.

You can download the file by clicking on Click here for options on the Information bar and selecting Download File.

If you want to turn off automatic blocking of file downloads from Moodle, then add http://lms.monm.edu to your list of trusted Web sites in Internet Explorer. The directions for Internet Explorer 7.0 differ slightly from the directions for Internet Explorer 6.0.

To add Moodle to Internet Explorer's list of trusted Web sites:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
     
  2. Click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
     
  3. Click on the Security tab.
     
  4. Click on Trusted sites, shown circled below.

  1. Click on the Sites button.
     
  2. Uncheck the Require sever verification (https:) for all sites in this zone checkbox, shown circled below.

  1. In the Add this Web site to the zone field, enter http://lms.monm.edu, as shown circled below.

  1. Click on the Add button.
     
  2. Click on the OK button.
     
  3. Click on the OK button.

Internet Explorer 7.0:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
     
  2. Click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
     
  3. Click on the Security tab.
     
  4. Click on Trusted sites, shown circled below.

  1. Click on the Sites button.
     
  2. Uncheck the Require sever verification (https:) for all sites in this zone checkbox, shown circled below.

  1. In the Add this Web site to the zone field, enter http://lms.monm.edu, as shown circled below.

  1. Click on the Add button.
     
  2. Click on the Close button.
     
  3. Click on the Custom Level button.

  1. Click on the Reset to down arrow and select Medium-low.

  2. Click on the Yes button.

  3. Click on the OK button.

  4. Click on the OK button.

  5. Close and re-open Internet Explorer.

Can't View Files from Off Campus

If you have trouble opening a PowerPoint, Word, or other Microsoft Office file in Moodle from off campus, then save it to your desktop first and open the file from there.

To save a file from Moodle to your desktop:

  1. On the course home page, click on the file. The File Download window appears.
     
  2. Click on the Save button.

Note: If you do not have the Microsoft Office program needed to open the file, then you'll need to download a free viewer from Microsoft. Links to the PowerPoint, Word, and Excel viewers are below.

* You must also install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats to view Word 2007 and Excel 2007 files using the Word 2003 and Excel 2003 viewers.

Name Missing from List of Potential Users in Assign Roles

If you can't find a name in the list of potential users on the Assign Roles page, then please contact Marcie Beintema at x2194.

Can't Edit or Delete a Calendar Event

If the Edit and Delete tools, shown circled below, are missing from your calendar events, then try logging out of Moodle and logging back in. If that doesn't do the trick, then please contact Marcie Beintema at x2194.

Due Dates Do Not Appear on the Calendar

If you've added activities to your course that have due dates, but the due dates don't appear on the course calendar, then make sure that the activities are not hidden. (The due dates for hidden activities do not display on the calendar.)

Can't Delete News Forum

If you are using the weekly course format, then you must go into the course settings and change the News items to show field to 0. Then, you should be able to delete the News forum.

Gradebook Says "No grades returned."

Your gradebook displays "No grades returned" when you do not have any students enrolled in your course and/or you do not have any graded activities added to your course. Once you enroll students and add a graded activity, you will be able to open your gradebook and view student names, etc.

Gradebook Says "No grade letters set"

If your gradebook says "No grade letters set," as shown circled below, then click on the Set Grade Letters tab and click on the Save Changes button. When you return to the View Grades tab, the letter grades should appear.

The letter grades in the gradebook are wrong.

If you are using weighted grades (i.e., you have created categories using the Set Categories tab and have weighted the categories using the Set Weights tab) and the letter grades in the gradebook are wrong, then follow the steps below.

  1. Click on the Set Categories tab and re-assign all activities that you have not graded yet to the Unassigned category.
     
  2. Click on the Set Weights tab, click the Hidden checkbox for the Uncategorized category, and click on the Save Changes button.
     
  3. Click on the Set Preferences tab, click on the Show Hidden Items down arrow and select No, and click on the Save Preferences button. (When you return to the View Grades tab, the correct letter grades should display.)
     
  4. When you are ready to grade an activity in the Uncategorized category, assign it to the correct category using the Set Categories tab before you grade it.

I made changes to a file on my computer and re-uploaded it. When I open the revised file in Moodle, the changes are not there.

If you make changes to a file on your computer, re-upload it, and don't see your changes when you open the file in Moodle, then try clicking the Refresh button on your browser. If you still do not see your changes, then please contact Marcie Beintema at x2194.
