Overview
Terminal Services provides faculty and staff with remote
access to the Monmouth College network.
When you log on to a Terminal Services session, a desktop
appears that is similar to your office computer's desktop. From this
desktop, you can access all of your files on the F:
drive, many of the network-installed programs, your Outlook personal
folders, plus all of your Internet Explorer favorites.
A few notes about Terminal Services:
- Mac users must download and install the Microsoft Remote
Desktop Client for Mac in order to use Terminal Services.
(For more information, please go to
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop.)
- When you make changes to a file from within a Terminal
Services session, the changes are saved to your F: drive.
- You cannot print locally from within a Terminal Services
session. (If you try to print a file, it will print to your
office printer.) To print a document to your local printer,
use the File Access program to download the file from your
F: drive to your computer. Then, print the file from your
computer. (For more information, see
http://department.monm.edu/is/help-docs/file-access/default.htm.)
- You cannot listen to voice mail messages in Outlook from
within a Terminal Services session. To listen to a voice
mail message, open your web browser on your computer, log on
to Outlook Web Access, and listen to the message from there.
(After you log on to Outlook Web Access, save the voice mail
message attachment to your desktop and then double-click on
it to play it.)
- In order to access a personal folder in Outlook from
within a Terminal Services session, you may need to open it.
To do so, open Outlook from within the Terminal Services
session. Then, click on the File menu and select Open
- Outlook Data File. Click on the Look in down arrow and make sure that the
location is F:/windows/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook, click
on the folder that you want to open, and click on the OK
button.
- When you are finished using Terminal Services, always
log off of the session before closing the Terminal Services
window. If don’t log off, then the Terminal Services session
will remain open, and this could cause conflicts when you
log back in to your office computer.
To log off of Terminal Services, click on the Start
button in your Terminal Services window and select
Log Off. (If you forget to log off, then please
call the Information Systems Center at x2106.)
- If you become disconnected from a Terminal Services
session, then you should be able to log back on and access
the same session. If you do not access the same session when
you log back on, then please call the Information Systems
Center at x2106.
Log On to a Terminal Services Session (Windows XP or
Vista)
Note: The first time that you log on to Terminal Services, an
initial setup process runs, which takes several seconds to complete.
Do not press any keys on the keyboard or click the mouse during this
setup process.

Log Off of a Terminal Services Session
IMPORTANT! You must log off of your Terminal Services session
before closing your browser widow. If you do not log off, then your
Terminal Services session will remain open, and any files that were
open when you left the session will be locked for editing when you
try to access them on your campus computer. (If you forget to log
off, then call the Information Systems Center at x2106.)
