Tips for Creating a Strong Password

Good network security depends largely upon the use of strong passwords. Hackers oftentimes try to gain access to a network by using special software that tries all types of common user name/password combinations. If you use an easy-to-guess password, then you risk having your computer account and the network hacked.

To create a strong password:

  • Use at least seven characters.

  • Use a combination of letters(upper and lower case), numbers, and symbols in your password.

  • Use a least one symbol character in the second through sixth position.

  • Use a password that is different from prior passwords.

  • Do not use passwords that are based on personal information, such as your user name, pet’s name, mother’s maiden name, hometown name, birth date, social security number, driver’s license number, PIN number, etc.

  • Do not use a word or name out of a dictionary in any language unless you significantly alter it in some way.

  • Consider creating a phrase and using the first letter of each word in the phrase as your password or making up a long word.

Good Password Practices

Once you have created a password, keep it secure. Do not write it down or share it with anyone! Also, you should change your password once every sixty to ninety days.
