- How to Scan a Computer for Viruses & Spyware
How to Scan a
Computer for Viruses & Spyware
If you think your computer may be infected, then follow the
steps below to ensure that all virus and spyware programs are
detected and removed.
- Make sure that your anti-virus/anti-spyware software is
up-to-date.
- Physically disconnect the computer from the Internet (e.g., unplug the data cable).
- If you have Windows 7, Vista, or XP, then turn off System
Restore. (For
directions, see
Turn System Restore On or
Off.)
- Perform a full system scan using your anti-virus/anti-spyware program and remove
or "fix" all of the malicious programs that are detected.
- Reboot the computer.
- Perform another full system scan and remove any more malicious
programs that are detected.
- Keep rebooting and rescanning until no more malicious programs are
detected.
- If you have Windows 7, Vista, or XP, then turn on System Restore. (For directions, see
Turn System Restore On or
Off.)
- Reconnect the computer to the Internet (e.g., plug the
data cable back in).
