Turn On the Windows Built-In Firewall

Windows XP

IMPORTANT! If you are using a third-party firewall, then DO NOT use the built-in Windows firewall. (Unless you are familiar with how to configure multiple firewalls, you should not install or use more than one firewall program on your computer.)

Note: If you have Service Pack 2, then the built-in firewall should already be turned on by default.

  1. Open the Control Panel in classic view and double-click on Windows Firewall.
  2. On the General tab, click on the On button.
  3. Click on the OK button.

Windows Vista

IMPORTANT! If you are using a third-party firewall, then DO NOT use the built-in Windows firewall. (Unless you are familiar with how to configure multiple firewalls, you should not install or use more than one firewall program on your computer.)

Note: The built-in firewall should already be turned on by default.

  1. Open the Control Panel in classic view and double-click on Security.
  2. Click on Windows Firewall.
  3. Click on Turn Windows Firewall On or Off.
  4. Click on On (recommended).
  5. Click on the OK button.
