Configure Your FTP Program to Use Passive Transfer

Overview

If you want to use FTP to download and upload files, then your FTP program must be configured to use passive transfer.

Below are instructions for configuring Internet Explorer 8, WS_FTP95 LE, and command line FTP to use passive transfer. If the directions for your FTP application are not listed here, then refer to your application's help documentation.

Note: You can download WS_FTP95 LE from the network and install it on your computer. (For more information, see Download and Install WS_FTP95 LE.)

Configure Internet Explorer 8 to Use Passive Transfer

  1. Click the Tools down arrow and select Internet Options.
  2. On the Advanced tab, under Browsing, select Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem capability) checkbox.

  3. Click the OK button.

Configure WS_FTP95 LE to Use Passive Transfer

  1. Open WS_FTP95 LE.
  2. Click the Connect button. The Session Properties window appears.
  3. On the Advanced tab, check the Passive transfers checkbox.

  4. Click the OK button.

Use Passive Transfer with Command Line FTP

Depending upon your version of command line FTP, type in either passive or PASV to turn on passive mode.
