Where is wireless networking available on campus? Wireless networking is available in the library, in the Stockdale Center, in all of the academic buildings, and in all of the residence halls. To connect to the wireless network, use mcpublic. Where are computer labs located on campus? Computer labs are located in the basements of the library, Mellinger Learning Center, Wallace hall, and on the first floor of Haldeman-Thiessen. I forgot my password. What should I do? If you forget your password, then bring your photo ID card to the Information Systems Center and ask to have it reset. IMPORTANT! The Information Systems Center will NOT reset your password unless you show your photo ID card. Where should I save my files on the network? We recommend that you save and store your files in the My Documents folder on the F: drive. That way, you can access your files from any campus or off-campus computer, and your files will be backed up each night. How much storage space do I have on the F: drive for my files? You have 100 MB of storage space for your files on the F: drive. If you get close to this limit, then you may having trouble saving files to the F: drive or you not be able to save to the F: drive at all. Other problems may also occur if your F: drive space gets full. (You will receive a warning message to let you know when your F: drive space is getting full.) If you have having trouble saving to the F: drive, then the first thing that you should do is check the amount of space that you are using. (For more information, see Check Your F: Drive Space Usage.) If your F: drive space is getting full, then you should delete some of your files or move some of your files to the G: drive. (The G: drive is NOT backed up, so DO NOT store important files there!) Note: Pay attention to picture, audio, or video files that you store on the F: drive. If they are large files or if you have a lot of them, then they could be consuming a lot of your F: drive space. How do I copy my files from last year to my current network account on the F: drive?
How do I change my MC password? On a lab computer, press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time and then click on the Change Password button. From your room or off campus, log in to Outlook Web Access, click on the Options button, and select Change Password on the left side of the window. I accidentally deleted a file. Can I get it back? If the file was saved on the F: drive and backed up during the nightly back-up process, then the Information Systems Center may be able to retrieve a backed-up copy of the file for you. Where can I get computer training? The Information Systems Center offers free computer training on network-installed software to all students, faculty, and staff. For more information, see Computer Training. Can I publish web pages on the college's web server? Yes. In order to publish your own web pages on the college's web server, you must first apply for personal web space. To do so, go to http://department.monm.edu/is/system/perswebapp and complete the online application. Note: FrontPage is the program used at Monmouth College for web page development. If you would like FrontPage training, then please call the Information Systems Center at x2106. How do I access my MC e-mail from my room or off campus? You can access your MC e-mail via the Web using Outlook Web Access. For more information, see the Outlook Web Access help documentation. How much storage space do I have in my MC e-mail account for messages? You have 25 MB (or about 25,600 KB) of space in your e-mail account for messages. If your amount of used space reaches 10 MB (or 10,240 KB), then you will receive an automated message to let you know you that your e-mail account is getting full. If your amount of used space reaches 12 MB (or 12,288 KB), then you'll be able to receive messages, but you won’t be able to send any. To keep your e-mail space from filling up, you should periodically clean out your Inbox, Sent Items, Junk E-Mail, and Deleted Items folders or move messages that you want to keep to a personal folder. You should also periodically examine your e-mail space usage to see which folders are using the most space. For more information, see Create a Personal Folder. Where can I save messages so that they don't take up space in my e-mail account? If you have message that you want to keep, then we recommend storing them in a personal folder, which is an Outlook data file that resides on your F: drive rather than on the e-mail server. Because of this, messages stored in a personal folder do not take up space in your e-mail account. For more information, see Create a Personal Folder. Can I send a mass e-mail to everyone on campus? No. It is against Monmouth College policy to send mass e-mails. General announcements should be posted in the Outlook Message Center. To post a message in the Message Center, open the folder in which you
want to post a message, click on the New Post in This Folder
How can I keep my MC e-mail account open for up to one year after I graduate? To keep your MC e-mail account open for up to one year after you graduate, you must fill out an Alumni Account form and return it to the Information Systems Center. The form is available online at http://department.monm.edu/is/forms/InfoSys/PDFs/alumni-acct.pdf I want to connect my personal computer to the residence hall network. What specs should it have? In order to connect your personal computer to the Monmouth College residence hall network, your computer needs to have:
If you want to connect to the wireless network, then your computer must have a wireless network adapter card. No other specifications are required. What kind of support does the college provide for my personal computer? The Information Systems Center can provide limited support for Windows-based computers. We can assist you with problems directly related to network connections and virus/spyware infections, but we cannot perform repairs or change software configurations on your machine. If you experience a network or virus/spyware problem with your computer, then you may schedule an appointment with a Student Technology Assistant by going to http://department.monm.edu/is/sta and submitting a request. If you experience a problem with your computer that is not network or virus/spyware related, then see Where to Get Help for Your Personal Computer for a list of computer services in the Monmouth area. How can I access my MC e-mail and F: drive files from my room or off campus? When you are in your room or off campus, you can access your e-mail via the Web using Outlook Web Access, and you can transfer files back and forth between your F: drive and your personal computer using the web-based File Access program. For more information, see the Outlook Web Access help documentation and the File Access help documentation. If your computer is running very slow, crashing a lot, or displaying more pop-up ads than normal, then it may be infected with viruses and/or spyware. You should scan your computer for viruses and spyware using our recommended scanning procedure and remove any virus or spyware programs that are found. For more information, see Perform a Full Virus or Spyware Scan. Note: If you would like help cleaning your computer, then you may schedule an appointment with a Student Technology Assistant by going to http://department.monm.edu/is/sta and submitting a request. If you do not have anti-virus software on your personal computer, then we recommend that you download and install AVG, which is free and available at http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/. Note: Do not install or use more than one anti-virus program on your computer. If you do not have anti-spyware software, then we recommend that you download and install the following free programs: If you receive a "Page Not Found" error when you try to open a video or audio file, then set your web browser to use a proxy server with the address 10.20.0.1 and port 8080. For more information, see Specify the Proxy Server Address and Port in Internet Explorer. Can I use an FTP program on my personal computer to upload and download files? Yes, but your FTP program must be configured to use passive transfer. For more information, see Configure Your FTP Program to Use Passive Transfer. |
