Shared Folders


Access a Shared Folder

If you know the name of the computer that has the shared folder that you want to access, then click on the Start button, select Run, and type two backward slashes followed by the computer name in the Open field (e.g., \\jdoe).

If you don't know the name of the computer, then follow the steps below.

  1. Double-click on the My Network Places icon (for Windows ME) or the My Network Places icon (for Windows 2000).
     
  2. Double-click on the Entire Network icon (for Windows ME) or Microsoft Networks icon (for Windows 2000).

    Note: If you don't see anything in the Entire Network window, then you may need to disable Browse Master. (For more information, see Disable Browse Master for Windows ME.)
     
  3. Double-click on the workgroup that contains the name of the computer that you want to access. 
     
  4. Double-click on the computer name. The shared folder appears.

Create a Shared Folder


Activate the File Sharing Service for Windows ME

To activate the file sharing service for Windows ME:

  1. Click on the Start button and select Settings - Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears.
     
  2. Double-click on the Network icon. The Network window appears.
     
  3. Click on the Add button. The Select Network Component Type window appears.
     
  4. Click on Service.
     
  5. Click on the Add button. The Select Network Service window appears.
     
  6. Select File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.
     
  7. Click on the OK button. The Network window appears. File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks appears in the The following network components are installed area.
     
  8. Click on the File and Print Sharing button. The File and Print Sharing window appears.
     
  9. Make sure that a checkmark appears in the I want to be able to give others access to my files checkbox.
     
  10. Click on the OK button. The Network window appears.
     
  11. Click on the OK button. The System Settings Change window appears and displays a message to let you know that you must re-start you computer.
     
  12. Re-start your computer. The file sharing service is activated on your computer.

Disable Browse Master for Windows ME

To disable Browse Master for Windows ME:

  1. Click on the Start button and select Settings - Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears.
     
  2. Double-click on the Network icon. The Network window appears.
     
  3. Under The following network components are installed, click on File and Print Sharing.
     
  4. Click on the Properties button. The File and print sharing for Microsoft Network Properties window appears.
     
  5. Under Property, make sure that Browse Master is selected.
     
  6. Click on the Value down arrow and select Disabled.
     
  7. Click on the OK button. Browse Master is disabled.
