Find books on a particular subject
Locating books on a specific subject
To locate any books in Hewes Library, you need to take a look at the online catalog. The step-by-step instructions listed below will help you to begin your search:
- Start at the Hewes Library Homepage
- The library's catalog can be accessed from the Quicklinks section on the right-hand side, called Hewes Library Online Catalog or from the Catalogs page on the left-hand side.
- When the main search screen in the library's catalog appears, you have two options. You can browse subject headings, or you can find them on a search. Subject Keyword searches will look for the information you have entered in the subject heading fields of all item's records. Every item in the library's catalog has been assigned at least one, if not more than one, subject heading to describe the contents of the item. You can also do regular General, Author, and Title searches to find books that match your topic and use the subject headings already in those records to lead you towards other relevant material.
- For example, General Keyword searches using the terms "World War II" will yield some results in the library's catalog. The subject heading for the same topic in the catalog is "World War, 1939-1945" and searching with the subject heading will return twice as many results.
