Find Newspaper, Magazine, or Journal Articles

Locating Print Newspaper, Magazine, or Journal Articles

Print Periodicals in Hewes Library are physically located in two places. Current periodicals are to be found on the Main Level near the Coffee Shop and the rest of the bound periodical collection is located on the Lower Level on green shelving. Whether or not you have a citation will determine where you begin your search.

If you have an article citation...

  • First, you will need to determine if Hewes Library owns the magazine, newspaper, or journal that you are looking for. To do so, you will need to check the Periodical holdings list. It lists all of the periodicals and the dates of coverage that Hewes owns access to.
  • Perform a title search on the name of the publication that you are interested in and press Search. For example, one title search could be Journal of Academic Librarianship or Journal of Ecology.
  • If Hewes Library has holdings for the newspaper, magazine, or journal, it will appear on a results screen. It will list the dates and the location of the item. If it is in print, the print holdings for the periodical will be listed. If electronic access is available, a link will be provided to the corresponding database.

If you do not have an article citation and would like to begin research...

Today more and more resources are electronic. As a result, most indexes and databases are now available to you online. Here are a couple of ways to get started:

  • The Databases page of the library's homepage alphabetically lists all of the databases Hewes Library has access to. There are also options to view the list by title with a description for those who wish for a few sentences to describe the content of the databases.
  • You can also view the database list by subject area. For example, if you were beginning a biography research project, you might want to start with the biography subject page. Other subject guides include: Arts & Humanities, Business & Economics, Education, and News & Current Events to name a few.
  • A few beginner's databases are listed below:
    • Academic Search Premier
EBSCOhost's academic-specific database indexes 8,000+ periodicals in all disciplines. 4,600 titles are full-text or full-image, and 3,500 are peer-reviewed. Coverage: generally since 1980, but back to 1965 for some titles.
    • America's Newspapers
Full-text articles from the electronic editions of over 600 American newspapers, including Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune.
    • JSTOR
Indexes and provides access to full-image (.PDF) articles from over 600 journals in all disciplines. Some holdings extend back into the nineteenth century.
    • MLA International Bibliography
Indexes 4,000 international periodicals covering literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore. Coverage: since 1969. Updated ten times annually.
  • If you are still unsure of where to begin, stop by the Reference desk and talk to a librarian. Hewes Library's four reference librarians, Lauren Jensen, Lynn Daw, Pam Kontowicz, and Rick Sayre, are available to assist all patrons with their research needs. For regular reference hours, visit our Hours page. Librarians are also available by special appointment.
