Monmouth College Hewes Library research guides

ILA 101: Finding newspaper editorials / Professor Hayes (Fall 2005)

Below are listed library resources and research strategies that will help you to locate editorial articles in newspapers print and online, past and present. This guide is intended to get you started in your research; once you have mastered these tools, please see a librarian for further direction.

Print newspapers in Hewes Library

You may find a selection of print newspapers on the Main Level, between the Video Collection and the Current Periodicals (head toward the Coffee Shop). The thirteen titles to which we subscribe include national papers such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, regionals such as The Chicago Tribune and Peoria's The Journal Star, and locals including Monmouth's Daily Review Atlas.

You should find the most recent week or so at this location. If you would like to see older issues, the Library does keep a backfile of several months for most titles. Ask a librarian for assistance.

Online newspapers from Hewes Library

The Library subscribes to several databases that specialize in newspaper sources. Here are the three that you will find most useful for this assignment:

Current newspapers

  • Newspaper Source
Provides cover-to-cover full text of 23 national and international newspapers, and selected full text of 180 regional newspapers. Updated daily.

Historical newspapers

  • Chicago Tribune 1849-1984
Provides article images (.PDFs) of nearly every page and article of the Chicago Tribune, from its first issue as the Chicago Daily Tribune in 1849, through 1984.
  • New York Times 1851-2001
Provides article images (.PDFs) of nearly every page and article of the New York Times, from its first issue as the New York Daily Times in 1851, through 2001: 3.4 million pages in all.

Human resources: your local librarians

Hopefully, the ideas and resources above will help you to get started in your research. If you have any questions, comments or difficulties, please contact a librarian at the Reference Desk: (309) 457-2301. Ask early and ask often: the more time that you give us to help, the more we can do for you.
