About Us
MFL students lead the
campus effort to internationalize our community. As
engaged thinkers who question their own assumptions
within the context of the local campus as well as a
wider, international community, students become engaged
citizens—that is, educated and trained leaders and
professionals who are prepared to meet the challenges of
this dynamic, diverse world, think critically and
communicate effectively in the twenty-first century.
Through the study of
language and culture, students and faculty strive to
open up multiple paths toward cultural diversity,
intellectual challenge and aesthetic beauty. Moreover,
our classrooms serve as bridges where the native and the
target language/culture meet. As students cross the
bridge, they learn to appreciate the differences between
cultures and adjust themselves to unfamiliar
environments, while at the same time acquiring their
ability to communicate effectively in both their native
and target languages. Participation in a semester-long
or year-long study-abroad program is crucial to learning
how to communicate effectively with peoples with
different backgrounds and cultivating broad-minded
individuals who understand linguistic and cultural
differences and acknowledge multiple perspectives on the
human condition.
