Music Education Major.

Students preparing for certification in music education take:

MUSI 121, 122, 221, 222 – Music Theory I, II, III, IV

Three courses selected from:

MUSI 252 or 253 or 254 or 255 (String, Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Techniques)

MUSI 301 – Introduction to Conducting

MUSI 304 – Orchestration and Arranging

MUSI 312 – Teaching Music in the Elementary School

MUSI 313 or 314 – Choral or Instrumental Methods

MUSI 321 – History and Literature of Music I

MUSI 322 – History and Literature of Music II

MUSI 420 – Independent Study

Eight credits of applied music with the presentation of a half-recital during their junior year.

In addition, participation is required in one of the following ensembles during each semester the student is enrolled on campus:

MUSI 134 – Men’s or Women’s Choir

MUSI 181 – The Monmouth Chorale

MUSI 182 – String Ensemble

MUSI 184 – Concert Choir

MUSI 185 – Wind Ensemble

Attendance at campus concerts and recitals is required.

Music majors are required to demonstrate competence on the keyboard by passing an examination in functional piano. The major should consult with the department for additional policies.

The culminating experience for music majors is an independent study in the senior year consisting of an in-depth investigation of a topic chosen by the student in conjunction with the advisor.

Other requirements for the general music major apply to all music education majors.

Candidates must also complete the certification requirements described in the Education Department section of the catalog.


Elementary education majors seeking middle school certification in music must:

Take two courses (in sequence) chosen from:

MUSI 121, 122, 221, or 222 – Music Theory I, II, III, IV

One course chosen from:

MUSI 321 or 322 – History and Literature of Music I, II

MUSI 301 – Introduction to Conducting

MUSI 312 – Teaching Music in the Elementary School

Four credits in applied music (including two credits in piano if not the major applied instrument)

Four credits

MUSI 134 – Men’s or Women’s Choir

MUSI 181 – The Monmouth Chorale

MUSI 182 – String Ensemble

MUSI 184 – Concert Choir

MUSI 185 – Wind Ensemble
