II. Knowledge
A. General Knowledge

Both of these artifacts demonstrate my how I can apply my knowledge in the communications field to current and important cultural situations.  These examples, which are based on scholarly research, are also topics which are important to people of all areas of study.

Research Paper on the Ethnography of Communication
Writing this paper was an excellent experience for me because it allowed me to research a specific area of interest in which I had not had previous knowledge.  This topic, after I began to write my paper, began to mean more to me than simply writing a paper. The idea of how a society creates its norms and how one may not see them until they look at a different culture is shockingly true.  Every day, we take for granted the people that we know and the situations in which we put ourselves, however, do we know why we do the things that we do or how our norms are created?  The theory of speech codes attempts to show that when confronted with questions such as "why are you the way that you are," the easiest way to answer these questions is to place yourself in another situation.

Senior Seminar Case Study
The capstone course for my communication major was my Senior Seminar class titled Freedom of Expression and Ethics.  This class allowed for maximum discussion on current topics which would be of interest to recent college graduates and would effect their future careers.  This evaluation of alcohol ads and their effect on college campuses attempts to critique why there may be other alternatives to advertising which would not try to sell alcohol to minors.

In many phases of life, people are approached with difficult ethical decisions.  In this situation, the school was attempting to minimize the consumption of alcohol by minors by eliminating alcohol advertisements from the school newspaper.  However, these advertisements aided in funding for the newspaper and allowed this paper to be published.  Overall, the best solution would be to find other sponsors which would not attempt to promote alcohol consumption.  Knowing how to analyze difficult situations and maintain ethical standards is often a daunting task, however, in the long run, people will generally be more satisfied with themselves if they make ethical decisions.
