Psycho-Semiotic-Criticism.pdf (COMM 337: Communication
Criticism).
My semiotic criticism paper for COMM 337:
Communication Criticism, is when I applied my own knowledge of the
semiotic criticism method in relation to the film "Psycho."
The thesis for the paper was, "Using
the characteristics of semiotic criticism, an analysis of color of
the film, color of wardrobe, camera shot angles, and set design
shows the innocence and guilt portrayed by Marion Crane and Norman
Bates in “Psycho.”
I thoroughly enjoyed working on this
paper because I can represent my knowledge and insight on a
criticism method and apply it into actuality. I applied my
knowledge of rhetoric from class while working on this paper.
Artifact:
This paper I have
constructed in my Rhetorical Criticism course at Monmouth College
demonstrates that I am able to analyze and critique a communication
situation related to a movie. In Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” the
message is simple as communication events influence culture through
a semiotic criticism. The message is interpreted through semiotics
as certain figures, signs, and symbols are used to explain the
meanings portrayed behind daily life. The thesis for my paper was,
“Using the characteristics of semiotic criticism, an analysis of
color of the film, color of wardrobe, camera shot angles, and set
design shows the innocence and guilt portrayed by Marion Crane and
Norman Bates in “Psycho.”’ This paper was extremely life changing as
I wrote it because I learned to apply my communication knowledge of
rhetorical criticism from class and process the information and
compare its characteristics into a movie from 1960 originally filmed
in black and white. I learned that I have knowledge of this topic by
using characteristics of semiotics and relating them to “Psycho.”
