Lesson:  Classroom Mural
Grade Level:  3rd grade
Project Time:  1 hour
State Standards:  25.B.2
                             27.B.1
                             27.B.3
Description:  The famous mural by Diego Rivera is the main topic in this lesson.  In this lesson Diego Rivera will be discussed as well as how he was an important artist in Mexico.  The activity in this lesson is making a class 'mural'.
Objective:
    1.  Students will use their own judgment in scaling their picture for their given
         section of the mural.  (evaluation)
    2.  Students will draw and create how they see their section for their part of the
         mural.  (synthesis)
Materials and Resources:
Prepared by teacher before activity:
     1.  Pick out a picture
     2.  Make a copy of the picture and make it into a grid. The grid should
allow for each student to have his own area.  This is the area that he will
draw; it is his part of the mural
Per student:
     1.  Standard size of paper
     2.  A copy of the picture as a grid.  Each student will be assigned a different
               square.
     3.  Pencil
     4.  Markers
     5.  Ruler if desired
Procedure:
    1.  Introduction - give info. on Diego and show a picture of a mural painted by
         him
    *   Tell the children that we are going to do a class mural. It will be big like
         Diego Rivera's.
    2.  Pass out grid and blank paper
    *   May be helpful to have one different section highlighted
on  each page.  Only
highlight the grid lines, not the picture.   It will be easier for the child to see
         his section.
    3.  Have children draw what they see in their section in full detail on the blank
         paper.
    *   Remind them to draw to the edge of the paper - Tell them that they are
making one piece of a puzzle and that we are going to put all the pieces
         together when everyone is finished.
    4.  Have them color their picture.
    5.  When everyone is finished, help students put the mural together.  Hang it on
the wall when it is finished.
    6.  Closure and clean-up
Assessment:
    1.  Did the students show planning in drawing their section of the mural?
