Oxford University Debate visit a success - The Reporter Observer - Campus
MONMOUTH - Though it had been 79 years
since the last visit by an English university debating squad, Monmouth
sprung into action in just a few days after receiving word that debaters
from the Oxford Debate Union would be spending time on campus.
The debaters visited classes, met with students and their week culminated
with a debate that included MC students Ron Bronson and Brandie Miller and
was moderated by MC Forensics Team President Michelle Anstett.
The question of the week seemed to be "How did their visit come about?"
After all, its not everday that a group of students from the best known
university in the world - let alone one of the best debate teams in the
world - show up at a college where students revived debate less than three
years ago. "I noted they had space on their US tour, contacted their
President and they agreed to visit us," said Ron Bronson who arranged
their visit to the Midwest and Monmouth College.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, they sat in on classes and talked with students
about debate in the British tradition and conducted some debates in
classes during the day. Two members of the squad visited Wheaton College
in Wheaton, IL on Tuesday and Wednesday. "I have a good working
relationship with their coach and he was extremely interested in having
them visit. So we coordinated the visit. It's not everyday debaters of
[the Oxford debaters] calibre visit our area. So, it makes sense to spread
the wealth," said Bronson.
They participated in two debates on their college's television station,
which were attended by a federal judge from Chicago, their college
President and other members of the student community. "They told me they
got a warm reception and were glad for the opportunity to travel to
another place."
On Wednesday evening, the four debaters reunited to participate in a
public debate exhibiton at Monmouth on the topic of "Resolved, that
advertising to children under the age of eight should be prohibited."
Members of the community attended, as well as students. In the end, the
team of MC's Bronson and Miller, coupled with Oxford's Nick Sloboda
defeated the team of Ed Tomilinson, Sophie Buchan and Tom Goodhead 15-11
in an audience vote. "It was awesome to debate against them," said Miller.
Overall, the visit was a smashing success. "Throughout their time here,
they were pleased with everyone's hospitality and warmth towards them.
They had a great time and I think they will return to England with fond
memories of their time in Monmouth," he said.
Bronson said their trip was the first to the Midwest, but all the members
of the Oxford delegation had been to the US many times before. "So, I
think we should be glad that their first Midwestern visit was with us."
After leaving, the debaters headed for the University of Virginia before
returning to England early this week.
