3/20/99 vs. Wisconsin Lutheran 2-7, 7-1 (1-1)
Monmouth split its season-opening doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran, losing the opener in extra innings but rebounding to capture the nightcap. The first game was tied 2-2 after seven innings but sophomore Brad Davis surrendered a grand slam home run in the top of the 8th and was charged with the loss. It looked like the Scots would drop two as their bats were silent through the first five innings of the second game. However, a seven-run outburst in the 6th propelled them to their first win of the season and gave freshman Joe Larkins the victory. Freshman Greg Kloepping pitched a perfect inning in relief to finish off the win. Monmouth took advantage of 4 walks, a WLU error and a two-run double by senior Jeff Timmons to post the seven-spot.

Monmouth jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held on to take two of three games over the weekend. The Scots scored three runs in both the second and sixth innings and pounded out 13 hits. Freshman Steve Glasgow's RBI triple was the big hit in the second and Shawn Hickey and Joe Larkins connected for back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth. Sophomore transfer Jake Bilyeu threw seven strong innings (two hits, seven strikeouts) for the victory and freshman Adam Schweitzer pitched the final two innings, giving up only a single scratch run while striking out two batters. Glasgow was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Hickey drove in two runs on two hits and Larkins went 3-for-5. Senior Jay Turnbull also drove in two runs for Monmouth.

3/23/99 vs. Augustana 1-11, 7-9 (2-3)
The Fighting Scots dropped a pair to regional rival Augustana to fall to 2-3 on the season. Freshman Ryan Johnson threw the final three innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out three batters. In the second game Monmouth rallied from a 7-1 deficit to tie the score after six innings. The Scots put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, sparked by a bases-loaded, three-run double by Steve Glasgow, and pushed across the tying run in the sixth. Unfortunately sophomore Matt Carlson, who had come on in relief of starter Joe Larkins in the sixth, gave up a leadoff HR in the top of the seventh and another single run to absorb the loss.

3/26/99 vs. Rockford 19-3, 9-3 (4-3)
The Fighting Scots erupted for 22 hits and 28 runs to sweep a doubleheader against non-conference foe Rockford. Freshman Ryan Johnson gave up only two hits and one run through seven innings in the opener and won his second game of the season. Four players hit a double apiece for Monmouth and senior Jeff Timmons connected for his first homer of the season to spark the offense. Senior Andy Kahlenberg went 4-for-5 and Steve Glasgow was 3-for-4 in the first game. In the nightcap another five-run Monmouth outburst, this time in the fourth inning, broke the game open. A triple by freshman Joe Larkins and two doubles each by Glasgow and Matt Carlson backed up the three-hit pitching of freshman Greg Kloepping, who notched his second victory. Adam Schweitzer pitched the final three innings to preserve the win.

3/27/99 vs. Aurora 1-15, 6-9 (4-5)
Monmouth dipped back below the .500 mark for the season, dropping a pair to the nationally-ranked Spartans of Aurora. The Fighting Scots' bats were silent in the first game, scratching out only one run on one hit. Starter Jake Bilyeu was pounded for eight hits and the sophomore also walked seven and hit four batters in his five innings. Already up by a 8-1 count, AU put the game away with seven runs in the seventh. Aurora also started out fast in the second game with a four-run spurt in the first inning off of losing pitcher Brad Davis (0-3). Davis surrendered nine runs on 11 hits.

3/29/99 at Webster 7-3, 2-9 (5-6)
Monmouth began its spring trip to St. Louis with a split at Webster University. Freshman Joe Larkins pitched a complete-game victory in the opener, allowing three runs on five hits. Leading 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Casey Boydstun's two-run double ignited a four-run binge to give the Scots a seven run cushion and Larkins his second victory in as many starts. Senior Mark Foulkes was roughed up for seven runs on five hits to take the loss in the second game as the Scots were also guilty of three fielding errors which led to three unearned runs for Webster.

3/30/99 at Principia 12-2, 15-3 (7-6)
Monmouth improved to 3-1 on its break trip, sweeping a doubleheader at Principia in convincing fashion. Freshman pitchers Ryan Johnson and Greg Kloepping each posted complete-game performances for the Scots, who pounded out 25 hits on the day. Johnson held Principia to two first-inning runs in earning his second win of the season. He struck out eight batters and enjoyed plenty of run support from the offense, paced by Casey Boydstun's outstanding hitting performance. Boydstun hit for the cycle (1B, 2B, 3B and HR) and freshman Kip Rogers also belted a homer as Monmouth connected for seven extra-base hits. In the second game the Scots hit two more home runs as Andy Kahlenberg and Joe Larkins each went deep. Kahlenburg's blast was a grand slam, MC's first of the year, and highlighted a nine-run outburst in the third inning to give Kloepping all the runs he would need as the freshman scattered eight hits and struck out two.

3/31/99 at Eureka 4-7, 15-5 (8-7)
Monmouth finished the break week with a split at Eureka, dropping the first game but rebounding to rout the Red Devils in the nightcap. Jake Bilyeu gave up seven runs, including a home run in a five-run Eureka fourth, to take the loss for MC. A two-out RBI double by Kevin Clarey gave the Scots the lead in the third inning of the second game and Casey Boydstun followed with a decisive HR to put Monmouth ahead for good. Boydstun would later add another roundtripper, his third of the season, as the Scots padded the lead with 8 runs in the fourth. Brad Davis pitched a six-hitter to pick up his first win of the season for Monmouth.

4/05/99 vs. Eureka 10-4 (9-7)
The Scots won the rubber game of the three-game weekend set with Eureka, pounding out a 10-4 win at home. Monmouth scored in the first four innings, led off by a five-spot in the opening frame. A two-out, three-run double by Jim Starcevich cleared the bases and sparked the Scots' scoring barrage. Starcevich added another RBI double and four other Scots added RBIs to give senior Jay Turnbull the victory on the mound. Turnbull struck out 6 and allowed only three runs on five hits.

4/08/99 at Illinois College 7-9, 14-2 (10-8, 1-1)
Monmouth began Midwest Conference action on the road at IC and split in Jacksonville. The Fighting Scots put six runs on the board in the first inning but starter Brad Davis could not hold the lead as Illinois scored eight times in the middle innings to earn the come-from-behind win. Davis gave up 12 hits and three walks and also two IC homers in losing his third game in four decisions. Shawn Hickey returned to the Scots' lineup after missing several games with an ankle sprain to hit his first homer of the season and then connected for another in the second game as the Scots salvaged the split. Steve Glasgow, Andy Kahlenberg and Joe Larkins, who pitched seven innings for the victory, also hit home runs for Monmouth. The Scots enjoyed another big inning, this time scoring 7 runs in the third, before sealing their first MWC victory with seven runs in their final three at-bats. Larkins and Adam Schweitzer were dominant on the mound, Larkins striking out 11 Illinois batters and Schweitzer recording four Ks in two innings of relief.

4/11/99 vs. Illinois College 2-0, 4-5 (11-9, 2-2)
Monmouth stayed even in Midwest Conference play, splitting their second doubleheader with IC. Ryan Johnson overpowered the Blueboys in the first game, striking out 12 hitters on his way to a three-hit complete-game shutout. Johnson struck out six batters in a row at one stretch, lowered his ERA to 1.96 and maintained a perfect record at 3-0. Joe Larkins drove in both Monmouth runs, sending home Casey Boydstun with an RBI single in the first inning and slugging his third home run of the season, a solo shot with one out in the sixth. Jake Bilyeu took a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning of the second game but IC pushed across two unearned runs to claim the win. A throwing error by catcher Jason Thompson also led to two unearned runs in the fourth as Monmouth squandered 11 base hits. Casey Boydstun led MC hitters with a 3-for-5 performance, including two triples.

4/24/99 at Knox 2-1, 1-5 (12-10, 3-3)
Monmouth returned to action after almost two weeks of inactivity due to heavy spring rains and earned a split in their first MWC doubleheader against Knox. Freshman Ryan Johnson continued to shine on the mound for the Fighting Scots as he pitched a complete-game victory in the opener, allowing only two hits in seven innings. Johnson walked four and struck out four while improving his season record to 4-0. Joe Larkins drove in a run in the first with an RBI single and Andy Kahlenberg's sacrifice fly in the 6th inning, after Knox had tied the score with a single run in the fourth, proved to be the difference. Larkins took the loss in the second game, surrendering five runs on six hits, and was the unfortunate recipient of sloppy fielding by the Scots, who committed three costly errors. Larkins continued his clutch hitting at the plate, driving in the team's lone run with a first-inning double.

4/25/99 vs. Knox 2-3 (8), 1-2 (12-12, 3-5)
The Fighting Scots' postseason playoff hopes were dealt a serious blow as Monmouth dropped a pair of heartbreaking one-run games to Knox in Galesburg. Knox scored a run in the second inning of the first game and MC freshman Dustin White cranked his first home run of the season to knot the score in the fifth. The game remained tied and headed for extra innings. Brad Davis, who had held the Prairie Fire in check for seven innings, allowed two runs in the top of the first extra frame, the eventual game-winner coming in on a wild pitch. Monmouth mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth and had the tying run on third and winning run on second with one out but could not bring them home. In the second game Monmouth collected nine hits but could only manage one run. It came in the bottom of the seventh to break up a scoreless game but Knox rallied for two runs in the eighth off starter and loser Jake Bilyeu.

4/29/99 vs. Grinnell 0-1, 7-6 (11) (13-13, 4-6)
Monmouth remained at .500 for the season with an MWC split versus Grinnell. In the opener Pioneer ace Jake Chavez shut down the Scots on one hit as MC managed only two baserunners the entire game. Ryan Johnson was the hard-luck loser on the mound, dropping his first conference decision despite allowing only five hits. A second-inning error led to Grinnell's only run of the game. The Pioneers returned the favor in extra innings in th nightcap as Monmouth won in 11. Leading 6-4 entering the ninth, freshman Adam Schweitzer surrendered the tying runs on a two-out single. However, in the Scots' 11th, Casey Boydstun walked, stole second and third and scored the winning run on a wild throw by the Grinnell catcher

4/30/99 at Grinnell 4-7, 3-1 (14-14, 5-7)
Monmouth's postseason hopes were snuffed out with a first-game defeat at Grinnell. The Scots scored three times in the second inning, thanks in part to three Pioneer errors, but could not hold the lead. With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Brad Davis allowed a grand slam to Grinnell's #9 hitter. Monmouth scored one run in the 7th on Jay Turnbull's RBI single but it wasn't enough. Sophomore Jake Bilyeu provided a positive end to the doubleheader as he struck out a team-record 15 batters in the second game. Bilyeu struck out at least two batters in five of the nine innings and received offensive support from senior outfielder Andy Kahlenberg, who connected for a two-run homer in the fourth.

5/01/99 MacMurray 6-2, 8-10 (15-15)
Monmouth recorded its third consecutive doubleheader split, this time against non-conference rival MacMurray. The Fighting Scots took the first game 6-2 behind the complete-game performance of freshman Greg Kloepping. Kloepping struck out six and walked only two, allowing four hits over seven innings. Trailing 2-0 after two, MC scored four runs in the third on three home runs. Casey Boydstun connected on a two-run shot to tie the game and one out later Joe Larkins and Kevin Clarey hit back-to-back homers to give the Scots the lead. A sacrifice fly by Andy Kahlenberg and an RBI single by Boydstun tallied the other two runs for Monmouth. MacMurray jumped all over starter Mark Foulkes in the second game, building an 8-0 lead through the first five innings before MC rallied for eight runs in their half of the fifth. Joe Larkins' two-RBI double started the scoring and consecutive RBI hits by Shawn Hickey, Jeff Timmons, Jason Thompson and Steve Glasgow pulled the Scots even. However Ryan Johnson and Shane Flaar relieved Foulkes and gave up single runs in the 6th and 7th, Johnson taking the loss in relief.

5/02/99 at Illinois Wesleyan 8-10 (15-16)
Monmouth ended its spring season with a 10-8 loss in Bloomington to non-conference opponent Illinois Wesleyan. The Titans scored all their runs in the middle three innings to offset a three-run Monmouth first and take the victory. Shawn Hickey hit a two-run homer in the opening frame and Kevin Clarey added an RBI double to stake Adam Schweitzer to an early lead. After IWU had built a 10-5 lead, the Scots rallied for three runs in the seventh, keyed by an RBI triple by Jim Starcevich and run-scoring singles by Kip Rogers and David George. An inning-ending double play snuffed out the rally and the Titans held on for the win. The loss ended Monmouth's season at 15-16 overall.
