Lake Forest responded with two touchdown runs by tailback Tyrome Bembry of 5 and 35 yards to take a 14-7 lead after three quarters. A long Monmouth drive resulted in another Fighting Scot score as Eiler ran the final three yards but the PAT kick failed and Monmouth trailed by one. LFC regained the momentum one play after the ensuing kickoff as Bembry rambled 80 yards for his third touchdown of the game. Monmouth put together another impressive drive but turned the ball over on a fumble inside the Forester 10-yard line with less than three minutes on the clock. However, the Fighting Scots came back with a five-play, 52-yard TD drive in the second quarter which was capped off by a two-yard scoring run by sophomore Preston Eiler. As quick as the Scots gained momentum they lost it, surrendering an 85-yard return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Final Score: St. Norbert 27, Monmouth 6
Monmouth's brief two-game winning streak was ended as St. Norbert upset the Fighting Scots' Homecoming plans for victory with a 27-6 decision. The game, which does not count in Midwest Conference standings due to St. Norbert's one-year ineligibility penalty for rules violations, was played in torrential rain and thick mud on Bobby Woll Field in front of a wet but partisan Monmouth crowd. The Scots controlled the first half and scored the game's first touchdown on a 5-yard scamper by sophomore QB Jon Baikie late in the first quarter. St. Norbert was able to take advantage of several Monmouth mistakes in the second half as the Scots fumbled seven times and lost four to give the Green Knights several short drives for scores. Monmouth responded on their first possession with a 6-yard touchdown run by sophomore QB Jon Baikie and the extra point made it 7-6. However, the Scots' lead was short-lived as Ripon ran the ensuing kickoff back 91 yards to take the lead for good. A one-yard run 39 seconds before halftime and three second-half touchdown passes by Ripon made for 32 unanswered points and dropped Monmouth to 2-3 in league games. A second-half rally fell short on the road as the Fighting Scots dropped their third straight Midwest Conference game to a North Division opponent. Lawrence jumped out to a 14-0 advantage before Monmouth put points on the board on the first of two TD runs by sophomore QB Jon Baikie. Trailing 21-6 at halftime, the Scots pulled to within two points early in the fourth quarter on their longest scoring play of the season, a 69-yard pass from Baikie to junior WR Andrew Tyra. A two-point conversion pass failed, however, and the Scots could get no closer. Lawrence took over the ball with less than two minutes to play deep in Scots' territory and punched across a score with only 15 seconds showing on the clock for the final margin. Senior RB John Turnquist opened the scoring with a one-yard TD run in the first quarter but Grinnell responded with a touchdown on its next possession. The Monmouth defense was outstanding in the early going as the Scots intercepted Grinnell's Troy Dougherty, the nation's top-rated quarterback in passing efficiency, twice in the first quarter. Sophomore DB Matt Beverly returned one of the interceptions 67 yards for the Scots' second touchdown, the third-longest return in team history. Week #10 - November 14 vs. Knox….Monmouth, IL
Final Score: Knox 28, Monmouth 20
The Monmouth-Knox rivalry was the main focal point of the final game of the 1998 season but unfortunately for the Fighting Scot faithful the Prairie Fire were able to squeak out a 28-20 victory and retain possession of the coveted "Bronze Turkey" trophy given annually to the winner. Knox has won four straight contests and now holds a slight 50-49-10 edge in a series which dates back to 1894 and spans 109 games. Monmouth struck first on a short run by QB Kevin Engledow but Knox countered with two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. A 39-yard TD pass from Engledow to senior Jeff Timmons tied the score in the third period but Knox responded again five minutes later. Engledow found Andrew Tyra for the Scots' second score through the air early in the fourth quarter, a 35-yarder, but the PAT kick was missed to leave the Scots down 21-20. Knox drove for its fourth touchdown with 3:48 left to take a 28-20 lead. Monmouth had one last chance to tie the game but the Scots' final drive stalled at the Prairie Fire 20-yard line when four straight passes fell incomplete and the ball went to Knox on downs. The outcome left Monmouth in eighth place in the Midwest Conference at 2-6 (2-8 season).
