MONMOUTH FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF
Head Coach/Offensive Line
Kelly Kane has guided the Monmouth College football program since the fall of 1984. Kane, a 1970 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan, begins his 15th year at Monmouth with a career win-loss record of 67-62 (.519). His teams won Midwest Conference Southern Division championships in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Kane came to Monmouth College after high school coaching stops at Galesburg, Spring Valley Hall and Flanagan. He teaches in the physical education department and serves as advisor to physical education majors. He and his wife Pat have three children: Sean, Shannon and Casey.
Defensive coordinator Roger Haynes begins his 17th year as a member of the Monmouth coaching staff. He will again be responsible for the defensive calls on the field and will work with the secondary and special team squads. Haynes is the men's indoor/outdoor track and field coach and has guided his Fighting Scot track teams to 15 Midwest Conference team championships since 1985, including both MWC indoor and outdoor team titles for four straight years (1995-1998). A 1982 graduate of Monmouth, he also serves as an instructor in the physical education department.
Former Monmouth standout Mark Reed returns for his 6th season on the staff as quarterback and running back coach. Reed came to Monmouth from nearby Galesburg High School and graduated from the college in 1988. He was the prototypical option-offense quarterback and currently holds or shares 22 Monmouth game, season and career records, including rushing yardage and touchdowns for quarterbacks as well as the career total all-purpose yardage mark of 5,889 yards. His 17 rushing touchdowns in 1987 still stands as the NCAA Division III all-time national record for quarterbacks. He and his wife Charla have one child and live in Galesburg.
Sonny O=Neal begins his second season on the Monmouth staff. Inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches= Hall of Fame in 1990, O=Neal spent over 30 years on the prep scene at Palmyra Northwestern and Abingdon. His teams won a combined seven conference championship titles and advanced to the IHSA State playoffs several times. He will coach the linebackers. O=Neal and his wife Barbara Jo live in Abingdon and have three children.
Jamie Middlemas is in his second full season on the coaching staff this fall after working as a student assistant. He played defensive tackle at Monmouth after finishing his prep career at Georgetown High School. He will coach the defensive line positions.
Steve Kemp, another former Fighting Scot player, joins the coaching staff for the first time this fall. Kemp graduated from Monmouth in 1995 after a four-year playing career in which he set five new pass receiving records, including most career 100-yard games. He will work with the wide receivers and tight ends.
Brian Woodard, a 1997 Monmouth graduate, is another first-time member of the football staff. Woodard, who will work on the defensive side of the ball, played football for two seasons at Monmouth and was a four-year letterman in track, where he was a Midwest Conference champion in the hurdles and sprint relays.
